Bunker Hill Evens 2-A Baseball; Whiteville Forces Third Game In 1-A Baseball, Richmond Evens 4-A Series

BUNKER HILL EDGES MIDWAY IN SECOND GAME TO TIE 2-A SERIES

 

            GREENSBORO— Junior third baseman Cooper Wray went two for three and drove in three runs to lead Bunker Hill to a 4-3 win over Midway and even the series Saturday afternoon in the second game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A baseball championship series at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

             The third and final game of the series is scheduled for Saturday night at 8 p.m.

            The game was tied 1-1 in the sixth, after a double by Wray had scored a run for the Bears in the fourth to even the score.  A two-run single by Wray gave Bunker Hill the lead for good.

            Clay Ervin was the winning pitcher, striking out five and walking four while yielding five hits. Taylor Calcutt got the loss.

            Matt Barefoot had two hits for Midway while Luke Clark drove in two runs for the Raiders with a double in the home half of the sixth.

            In the opening game on Friday night, Austin Hardison had three hits in four at bats and Dylan Hardison went the distance on the mound as Midway rolled past Bunker Hill 10-3.

            Midway, in the championships for the second consecutive year, slipped to 26-5.  The Bears are now 27-6.

            This is the 98th year for baseball championships in the NCHSAA. The Raleigh Sports Consortium and Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau serve as host city sponsors for the championship.

WHITEVILLE EXPLODES TO EVEN SERIES IN NCHSAA 1-A BASEBALL

            ZEBULON – Whiteville stunned East Surry with a seven-run third inning and went on to deal the Cardinals their first loss of the season by 10-0 on Saturday and even the series in game two of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A baseball championship at Five County Stadium.

            The game was halted by the 10-run rule, so the decisive game three is now set for 5 pm on Saturday.

            The Whiteville 15-hit attack saw every starter hit safely and every starter had at least one RBI.  Geraldo Magglioli had three hits for the Wolfpack and Hunter Harwood, MacKenzie Gore and Zack Pait each had two hits, with Pait knocking in two runs. The Wolfpack parlayed two doubles and four singles into seven runs in their big inning.

            Freshman Gore shut out the Cardinals and allowed just three hits. Scott Meredith, who suffered his first defeat, was charged with the loss.

            Logan Sheets collected two hits for East Surry.

            The Wolfpack ran their record to 25-6 while East Surry’s winning streak was snapped at 31. The Cards are now 31-1.

NCHSAA 4-A BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP–GAME TWO
RICHMOND RALLIES FOR DRAMATIC 8-7 VICTORY TO EVEN 4-A BASEBALL SERIES
 

       GREENSBORO— A solo home run by Ethan Baucom tied the game in the seventh and a walk-off single by Cody Leviner won the game for Richmond as the Raiders edged West Forsyth 8-7 on Saturday in the second game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A baseball championship series at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

     The series is now even at one game apiece with the decisive game set for Saturday at 5 p.m. West Forsyth is 28-6 on the year while Richmond slipped to 24-8-1.

      Richmond had scored one run in the first and five in the second to open up a 6-0 lead, but the Titans battled back with a single run in the fourth and then five in the fifth to carry a 7-6 lead into the final frame. A two-run single by Alex Saphar was a key blow in the fifth. 
       Designated hitter Nick Bullard had three hits in four trips for the Raiders, including a two-run triple, while Baucom and James Buie had two hits each in the 12-hit Richmond attack.

        Aaron Stampfer was three for four for West with a double and two RBI.  Joe Butler was the winning pitcher in relief for Richmond while Alex Vanderstok was charged with the loss.
