Athletes From Riverside, East Carteret Earn NCHSAA Performance of Week Awards

            CHAPEL HILL—Kayla Jones of Riverside High School in Martin County and Jacque Brown of East Carteret High School are the winners of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel with Subway® Restaurants.
 
           Each week one male and one female athlete in NCHSAA competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
 
          Both athletes had outstanding weeks during play in the NCHSAA state basketball playoffs and earned Most Valuable Player honors in their respective regional tournaments.
 
         Sophomore Kayla Jones led the Riverside women to a regional title and their second straight berth in the state championship game.  Jones was the MVP of the Eastern Regional 1-A event with 26 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in a 67-47 victory over Rosewood in the final.
 
         In a come-from-behind 62-60 victory over Roxboro Community in the regional semifinals, Jones tallied 19 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, handed out five assists and had three steals.
 
        For the season she has a 20.7 points per game average, pulls down 8.8 rebounds a game and also gets 3.1 steals and 4.0 assists.

        East Carteret point guard Jacque Brown, a 5-10, 150-pounder. helped lead the Mariners to the NCHSAA state championship game for the second straight year as East won the Eastern Regional men’s tournament. He poured in 29 points, grabbed seven rebounds had six assists and two steals in a 75-60 victory over Pinetown Northside in the regional final. That was preceded in the semifinals by a 30-point, 12-rebound, three assist effort in a 78-62 triumph over Weldon.
