Athlete From Enka, Marvin Ridge Earn NCHSAA Performance Of The Week Awards

CHAPEL HILL— Jordan Harris of Enka High School and Max Wotell of Marvin Ridge High School in Waxhaw are the winners of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel with Subway® Restaurants.

Each week one male and one female athlete in NCHSAA competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators. This is the final week for the awards since the state baseball and softball championships have concluded, the last sports competing during the spring season.

Harris, a senior catcher who entered the state finals batting a whopping. 476, was named the Most Valuable Player of the NCHSAA 3-A softball championship as the Sugar Jets completed a perfect 28-0 season, the only undefeated team in the state in baseball or softball this spring.

Harris led Enka to a sweep of their best of three series with Northern Guilford. She had three hits, including a home run, and two runs batted in as Enka won the opener 5-1, and then had a single and double good for three RBI in game two as the Sugar Jets rolled by a 10-0 score.

Wotell, a 6-3, 190-pound lefthanded pitcher who also plays outfield,  was the Most Valuable Player in the 3-A baseball championship, leading Marvin Ridge to its first ever NCHSAA baseball state crown.  He struck out eight and fired a one-hit shutout in the opening game of the best-of-three series as the Mavericks won 2-0 over Pikeville Charles B. Aycock.  It was his 14th pitching victory of the season.

In game two, his run-scoring single in the fourth inning broke a 2-2 tie and helped Marvin Ridge on its way to a 7-3 triumph.  Wotell earlier was named the Gatorade North Carolina Baseball Player of the Year, and has committed to the University of Arizona although he is also projected as an early round selection in the upcoming Major League Baseball draft.

TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during a SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients are also recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
