North Carolina High School Athletic Association

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association Record Book is one of the most comprehensive in the nation and one of the most visited parts of the NCHSAA website.

The Record Book chronicles student-athlete achievements in a variety of sports and is now exclusively on line.  The book was begun in 1987 and there were three hard copy versions that were printed by the Raleigh News and Observer. Now the book is maintained on line entirely by the NCHSAA and is updated regularly.

The record book follows the same protocol for documentation that is done at the national level by the National Federation of State High School Associations. Coaches, for instance, may send in record applications and then provide the appropriate documentation (scorebook copies or scoresheets, statistics box, cumulative statistics, etc) for the record category. Sometimes newspaper clippings are also sent for verification purposes.

Those records which might receive national recognition are then forwarded to the NFHS for consideration.

Not only does the Record Book list state record holders in a variety of sports and categories, but there are "performance listings" similar in format to the national record book. In many cases there is a top 10 or even more in certain areas. The records are based on what has been submitted and then approved for publication.
