CLEMMONS— Chapel Hill swept both North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A cross-country team championships on Saturday in action at Tanglewood Park.



The Chapel Hill men, led by individual winner Taylor Gilland of the Tigers, had 52 points to104 for Charlotte Myers Park and 136 for Raleigh Enloe. On the women’s side, Chapel Hill had 40 points to 78 for runner-up Charlotte Providence. Sophomore Kim Spano of North Mecklenburg was the individual 4-A women’s winner, outdistancing the field by almost 30 seconds in 18:20.92.

RALEIGH – Person, Hendersonville, Cardinal Gibbons and Southwest Guilford each took state titles in their respective classifications in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state volleyball championships on Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum.



Person dropped the opening game in the 4-A

championship and then stormed back to win by 23-25, 26-24, 25-23 and 25-20. Providence led 8-4 in the fourth game before the Rockets came back and then pulled away from an 18-all tie to take the title.

BURLINGTON -- Greensboro Page won its third consecutive North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4-A women’s dual team tennis title on Saturday as the Pirates defeated Raleigh Broughton 5-2 in action on a cold Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center.



Page finished the season 20-0 and won its 59th consecutive dual match. It was the fifth consecutive year the two teams met in the finals.

BURLINGTON – The 17th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championships in women’s dual team tennis will be contested on Saturday with four titles up for grabs.



The 1-A and 2-A finals will start at nine o’clock Saturday morning with the 3-A and 4-A matches starting at noon. All of the qualifiers won regional matches on Thursday to advance to the state finals, and there are four unbeaten teams among the eight finalists.

CHAPEL HILL—The pairings are now set for the 31st annual edition of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state volleyball championships, scheduled for Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh.



Teams advanced to the state championship matches by winning regional finals on Tuesday night, and two of the four championships are actually rematches of 2005 title battles.

BUIES CREEK—Sophomore Courtney Gunter of Indian Trail Porter Ridge fired the only sub-par round of the day on Tuesday to come from behind to win the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1A/2A/3A women’s golf individual championship at Keith Hills Country Club.

PINEHURST – Junior Julia Strandberg of Greensboro Page shot a two-over par 74 on Tuesday and held on to win the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championship at Pinehurst number five.

BUIES CREEK—Defending champion Cydney Clanton of Concord fired a one-over par 73 to open up a four-shot lead over the field in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 1A/2A/3A women’s golf championships at the Keith Hills Country Club on Monday.



The par 72, 5,638-yard layout proved to be tough on the field of golfers with only 17 scores under 90 on the day.

PINEHURST -- Ties for the lead were the order of the day on Monday after the opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Pinehurst number five.



Three golfers share the individual lead entering Tuesday’s final day of the 36-hole event while Charlotte Myers Park and Asheville A.C. Reynolds are knotted in the team standings.

BURLINGTON— Hickory players swept both the singles and doubles crowns in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A women’s tennis championships on Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center.



Hickory’s Emily Mauser completed a great high school career in which she advanced to the state championship match four consecutive times by winning her first state title after three runner-up finishes. Mauser defeated defending champion Cameron Chatman of Jamestown Ragsdale 6-4, 6-1, in the final.
