Throughout the course of the 2008-2009 academic year, we will seek to recognize some of the great names of the past to highlight the heritage of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association in honor of the Association's 95th anniversary. In this edition we are pleased to recognize George Whitfield.
The name George Whitfield has become synonymous with excellence in baseball in North Carolina.

UNCG TO OFFER SYMPOSIUM ON “GIRLS IN SPORT”
GREENSBORO – The University of North Carolina at Greensboro will be presenting the first annual Girls In Sports Symposium in February.
The event will be held on Friday, February 20, 2009, and is sponsored by The Center of Women’s Health and Wellness and the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at the university.
Call For Entries Issued For Second Annual Sports Publications Awards
LAUREL, MD -- The National High School Sports Publication Awards (NHSSPA) has issued a Call for Entries associated with their second annual awards competition. The competition is designed to recognize excellence in the preparation of high school athletic media guides and souvenir programs produced across the nation.
The National High School Sports Publication Awards will:
• recognize excellence in sports publications at the high school level
SIXTH ANNUAL NCHSAA INVITATIONAL CHEERLEADING CHAMPIONSHIP SCHEDULED
RALEIGH-- The sixth annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state invitational cheerleading championships are scheduled for the brand new Raleigh Convention Center on Saturday.
A record number of 115 teams have already registered for the event, including almost 2,000 cheerleaders.

CLEMMONS – Taylor Gilland of Chapel Hill and Kim Spano of North Mecklenburg each won their third consecutive individual championship in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A cross country championships at Tanglewood Park on Saturday.
FOUR CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED IN NCHSAA WOMEN’S DUAL TEAM TENNIS
BURLINGTON – Led by state 4-A singles champion Grace Baker, Charlotte Myers Park swept five of the six singles matches and downed East Chapel Hill 5-1 in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association dual team tennis championships at the Burlington Tennis Center on Saturday.

GREENVILLE ROSE SWEEPS MOUNT TABOR
RALEIGH – Pammy Craigle was named the Most Valuable Player as she led Greenville Rose to a sweep of Winston-Salem Mount Tabor and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A volleyball championship at Reynolds Coliseum on the campus of North Carolina State University on Saturday night.
Rose won three straight by scores of 25-12, 25-22 and 25-19.

RALEIGH – The 33rd edition of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state volleyball championships are slated for Saturday at historic Reynolds Coliseum on the North Carolina State University campus.
This is one of the strongest fields ever in the NCHSAA volleyball finals as four teams are undefeated and two more have only a single loss.
