We trust that the preseason period for fall athletics and the start of the 2007-2008 school year have been going well and will continue to do so.

Dr. Diane Frost, superintendent of the Asheboro City Schools and president of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors for this year, has asked us to contact the membership and thank you for your outstanding response to the challenges posed by the extreme and prolonged heat we have faced thus far this month.

Each school should have received 2 free handbooks last week. All handbooks that were ordered before today 8/9/07 have been shipped. We do still have additional handbooks available for anyone that still need to order some.

Please be aware that changes have been made to the 2007-08 Regional Assignments in Cross County, Men's & Women's Tennis, Wrestling, and Track & Field. The changes have occurred in the 3A Midwest and West Regionals. This information has been updated on each sport’s page.

CHAPEL HILL— Dr. Diane Frost, superintendent of the Asheboro city schools, will serve as president of the North Carolina High School Board of Directors for the 2007-08 academic year.

Frost will serve as the Association president for her one-year term, replacing Vann Pennell, the principal of South Brunswick High School. Pennell will serve in the role of past president.

Dr. Bill Harrison, superintendent of the Cumberland County schools, will be vice-president for the coming year.

Second Semester/Spring Semester scholar-athlete applications are due July 15. There has also been a new cover added to the forms selection for those schools using NCWise. Using this cover form will make the process easier and allow us to get you your certificates in a more timely manner.

Wachovia Bank, N.A., along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the final standings for the Wachovia Cup competitions for the 2006-07 sports season.

The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia Bank, N.A., and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. The Wachovia Cup program concluded in its 28th year in 2006-07.

CHAPEL HILL—The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has announced the final standings in the Wachovia Conference Cup competition for the 2006-2007 academic year.

The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by Wachovia and sanctioned by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performance within their respective athletic conferences. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.

CHAPEL HILL—Some 32 student-athletes from North Carolina High School Athletic Association member schools have been recognized for their outstanding sportsmanship as winners of “Heart of a Champion” recognition.

The sportsmanship recognition is part of the program offered by the NCHSAA Student Services Division and is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline. Mark Dreibelbis, NCHSAA assistant executive director, and student services assistant Chiquana Dancy administer the program.

DURHAM—Katie Ray of Cedar Ridge High School in Hillsborough is the 12th annual state winner in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s “Be A Good Sport” program sponsored by the Durham Sports Club.

The winner was recognized at the Durham Sports Club’s luncheon meeting at the Croasdaile Country Club on Wednesday. The award is known as the Russell E. Blunt Be A Good Sport award, in honor of the late long-time Durham Hillside coach who is a member of both the NCHSAA Hall of Fame and the National High School Sports Hall of Fame.

INDIANAPOLIS - Eleven individuals have been selected to receive National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Citations at the 88th NFHS Summer Meeting on July 3 in Palm Desert, California, including one from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

Que Tucker, deputy executive director of the NCHSAA, will be among those receiving the prestigious award.

ZEBULON— Princeton’s Ryan Daughtry was named the Most Valuable Player as his Bulldogs downed East Surry 7-3 in the third and decisive game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A baseball championship series at Five County Stadium on Saturday.
