CLIMAX, NC – In the highest scoring State Championship Game in the 108-year history of the NCHSAA State Basketball Championships, Farmville Central’s pace and athleticism proved too much for Hendersonville in the 2A Men’s Championship Game as the Jaguars raced past the Bearcats 113-98. The Jaguars secured their third straight State Championship including last year’s Co-Championship that they shared with Shelby when the season was halted due to COVID-19.

CLIMAX, NC – Shelby built an early lead just to watch Farmville Central whittle it down to one at the half. However, the Golden Lions responded in the second half, stretching their lead out to as many as 16 on their way to defeating Farmville Central 77-62 to win the 2A Women’s Basketball State Championship.
Maraja Pass was outstanding in all facets of the game for Shelby, engineering the offense masterfully from the point guard position. She scored 31 points, and had 8 assists on her way to earning the Kay Yow 2A Most Valuable Player Award in the game.
TRINITY, NC – The Murphy Bulldogs got a pair of 22-point performances from Torin Rogers and Sarah Pullium to boost the Bulldogs to the program’s fourth State Championship and a 76-34 victory over Princeton. The win gave Murphy back-to-back Championships after sharing last year’s title with Weldon when the Board of Directors awarded Co-State Championships to the Regional Champions as the State Finals were postponed and then ultimately cancelled due to COVID-19.
TRINITY, NC – Leah Barringer exploded for 32 points on 10 for 12 shooting and a perfect seven of seven at the line to lead Z.B. Vance to a 74-38 win over Garner and their second straight state championship. Barringer was chosen as the Kay Yow 4A State Championship MVP for her performance.
CLIMAX, NC – Weddington pushed their way past Northwood 56-47 thanks to a quartet of players in double figures led by junior guard Chase Lowe’s 14 points. Lowe was named the Charlie Adams 3A Most Valuable Player in the game, leading the Warriors to their first state championship in Men’s Basketball.

CHAPEL HILL— Meredith Wooten from Princeton High School and Cavanaugh MacQuarrie from Charlotte Catholic High School, have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week award. Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from coaches, media, and school administrators.

Former Franklinton High School coach, teacher, and athletic director Lester Wilder passed away over the weekend. Wilder coached numerous sports during his 41-year career at Franklinton, however, he was probably best known for leading the Red Rams Women’s Basketball teams until he retired in 2017.
Longtime Maiden head football coach and NCHSAA Hall of Fame member, Tom Brown, passed away earlier this week. Brown was one of the state’s most successful football coaches at the high school level after coming to the state from his home in Pennsylvania to attend Lenoir-Rhyne College.
