WENDELL—Gerald Melton has been named the head men’s basketball coach at East Wake High School, according to a report in the Raleigh News and Observer.

         Melton has previously been the coach at Bunn but had resigned during the summer to be closer to his parents.  He had posted a 270-113 mark at Bunn and his teams made 14 consecutive trips to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association playoffs during a 19-year coaching career. 

         Melton began his coaching career at Southern Nash and was there four years before going to Bunn.  He is a graduate of Bunn.

         He had already taken a teaching position in physical education on the East Wake faculty when the coaching job unexpectedly opened.
