The position requires an individual who understands the game and can effectively teach and train officials. The time requirements for this position are extensive. Individuals interested in applying must understand the comprehensive time and commitment responsibilities associated with this performance designation. Observation, evaluation, development, and recruitment are expected job performance factors. The individual should have technology-related skills in website development, video review, and teaching/presentation, both on-site and via electronic media.
Experience officiating the sport you will be assigning
Experience conducting officiating instructional clinics
Minimum 5 years of experience officiating for the NCHSAA
Recruit new officials
Train officials on current trends, field/court/pitch/deck/mat coverage, NFHS mechanics and signals, use of assigning platform, and game management
Develop officials through critique and evaluation, using film review when appropriate
Assign NCHSAA-registered and eligible officials only to any NCHSAA contest, prioritizing contest-level needs
Retain officials to avoid burnout and turnover using the three R’s – respect, recognition, reward
Communicate expectations of officials clearly, as well as what officials can expect from the Regional Supervisor of Officials
Be available to the officials as well as the schools
Maintain professional and positive interactions with officials, coaches, athletic directors, and other school personnel
Conduct on-site observations of officials in scrimmages and real-time contests
Maintain electronic availability using the NCHSAA-approved platform, currently DragonFly
Monitor reports submitted by officials for accuracy and correct where necessary
Establish/maintain a Board of Directors, Constitution, and Bylaws that include grievance policies and procedures, a Review Committee, and a Grievance Committee
Travel to required meetings across the state
Maintain positive interactions and communications with the Director of Officiating Services, Manager of Officiating Services, and other NCHSAA staff
The following process will be used for any vacancy in the Regional Supervisor of Officials position or when a new Association is formed, and a Regional Supervisor of Officials needs to be selected.
The NCHSAA will appoint a Selection Committee composed of local Officials, Coaches, Athletic Directors, Principals, and Superintendents from the schools served, plus an NCHSAA Board of Directors member or former member.
The NCHSAA office will appoint the Chairperson of the Selection Committee.
The NCHSAA Director of Officiating Services will send a vacancy announcement to all local officials for that sport in the Association, and will post it on the NCHSAA website.
The vacancy announcement will include:
– List of performance expectations
– Request for the candidate’s resume of experience
– Request for a list of references for the candidate
– Request for the applicant’s proposed plan for Association improvement
– An application
– Deadline for submission of application and supporting materials.
All submitted application materials will come to the NCHSAA Director of Officiating Services.
The NCHSAA Director of Officiating Services will electronically forward all submitted application materials to the Chairperson of the Selection Committee. The Chairperson will distribute the application materials to the Selection Committee.
The Selection Committee will determine which candidates are eligible for an interview based solely on the application materials submitted by the application deadline. The Chairperson of the Selection Committee will notify applicants not selected for an interview.
The Chairperson of the Selection Committee will notify each candidate of the interview date/time/location and duration.
After all interviews have been completed, the Chairperson of the Selection Committee will forward the committee’s recommendation of the individual they deem most prepared to meet the performance expectations of the position.
The NCHSAA Director of Officiating Services will submit the Selection Committee’s recommendation to the NCHSAA Board of Directors for approval.
