2025 Women’s Soccer Championships

The 2025 NCHSAA Women’s Soccer State Championships were held on May 30–31 at the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex in Matthews, marking the second consecutive year the event had taken place at this venue.

Mountain Island Charter claims first Championship

Mountain Island Charter 5, Wake Prep 0 – Box Score

MATTHEWS – The Mountain Island Charter Raptors toppled Wake Prep 5-0 on Saturday at the Mecklenburg County Sports Plex to win the program’s first NCHSAA Women’s Soccer Championship. 

The Raptors outshot Wake Prep 18-0 in the first half but only took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Tiniya Carter scored the first half’s lone goal, and it came in the 40th minute. Mountain Island pulled away in the second half as Harmoni Carter scored twice in a span of three minutes, and Eden Lewis and Cheyenne Painter also scored three minutes apart, 10 minutes later. 

Carter, who also assisted on Painter’s goal, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Championship. 

Mountain Island Charter ultimately outshot Wake Prep 27-3 and controlled nearly 60 percent of the possession. Goalkeeper Kendall Spence saved the three shots she faced to earn the clean sheet. 

For the Guardians, Chelesea Lange took two of their three attempts. Goalkeeper Fiona Jones recorded eight saves for Wake Prep.

Both teams were making their NCHSAA Women’s Soccer Championship Match debut on Saturday.

The winners of the 1A Soccer Sportsmanship Awards were Lylah Hoelscher from Mountain Island and Olivia Langton from Wake Prep.

Pine Lake Prep avenges 2024 PK loss


Pine Lake Prep 2, Franklin Academy 1 – Box Score
MATTHEWS – The Pine Lake Prep Pride avenged their heartbreaking penalty-kick loss from 2024 with 2-1 win against Franklin Academy on Saturday in the NCHSAA 2A Women’s Soccer State Championship Match.

Pine Lake Prep struck first as Sadie Peterson found the back of the net in the 22nd minute. That scoreline held through halftime but the Patriots tied things up just two minutes after the break. Olivia Olarte assisted Kayla Rice to tie the score at 1-1.
In the 66th minute, Peterson found Avery Garrett and she connected on the game-winning goal. Peterson was named the Most Valuable Player for the Championship.

The Pride turned up the offensive pressure in the second half. After being outshot 8-5 in the first half, Pine Lake Prep outshot Franklin Academy 18-5 in the second half. The Pride also earned more corner kicks than the Patriots, taking seven of them on the afternoon. 

Pine Lake keeper Madison Harris made five saves in the game and Franklin’s Griffin Coward made eight.
 
The Patriots were dealt the first loss of the season on Saturday as they finished 2025 24-1 and they are now 1-5 all-time in Championship Matches. The Pride finished the season 21-2 and on a 20-game winning streak. Pine Lake Prep is now 1-1 all-time in Championship Matches.

Western Alamance claims first title in program history


South Point 1, Western Alamance 0 – Box Score

MATTHEWS – The Western Alamance Warriors completed their undefeated season and claimed the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 3A Women’s Soccer Championship with a 1-0 win against South Point on Friday night at the Mecklenburg County Sports Plex.

The win is the first Women’s Soccer title in program history for Western Alamance and came in their first appearance in the title game. South Point finished as 3A runner-up for the second year in a row. 

The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie through the first 40 minutes, but Callie Athas broke the tie in the 50th minute. It was the sophomore’s 32nd goal of the 2025 season.

Western Alamance freshman Kayley Lee, who played 79 of the 80 minutes, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Championship. 

The Red Raiders were held to just one shot in the first half, only four for the game, and just one of them was on target. Western Alamance keeper Camilla Bentley earned one save on the way to a clean sheet. 

The Warriors held a slight advantage in possession for the game at 55-45, and they earned more corner kicks (7-3). Western Alamance took eight shots in the game, three on target.

The winners of the 3A Women’s Soccer Sportsmanship Awards were Emma Gryniewski from Western Alamance and Tayler Culbertson from South Point. 

Ardrey Kell claims second Championship


Ardrey Kell 2, Ashley 1 — Box Score
MATTHEWS — The Ardrey Kell Knights earned their second NCHSAA Women’s Soccer Championship with a 2-1 win against the Ashley Screaming Eagles on Saturday night at the Mecklenburg County Sports Plex.

Ardrey Kell set the tone right away as Ellie Riechman scored off an assist from Rhyan Winnek in the fourth minute of the game. Though that was the only goal of the first half, the Knights outshot Ashley 6-2 in the first 40 minutes and earned four corner kicks while the Eagles didn’t earn a corner until the second half. 

Four minutes into the second half, Ardrey Kell struck again. This time, Makayla Rodriguez scored off an assist from Brooke Watts.

Ashley’s Kieran Bradley scored an unassisted goal with 11 minutes to play but the Knights protected their lead the rest of the way and held on for the win. 

Riechman was named the Most Valuable Player for her efforts in the Championship Match.

Ardrey Kell won its first championship in 2023 when they beat Ashley 3-2. Ashley also finished as runner-up in 2024. The Knights finished the season 23-3-4 and are now 2-4 all-time in NCHSAA Championship Matches. Ashley finished 2025 22-3-2 and is 0-3 in Championship Matches. These two teams met on April 14th this season and battled to a 1-1 tie.
