2024 Basketball Championships

Winston-Salem, NC – In its first championship week format, the NCHSAA wraps up the 2024 Basketball Season, and eight schools go home with the title of state champion. Below are results by classification and gender. A photo gallery will be posted soon.

Wilson Prep Beats Corvian Community at the Buzzer 65-63

WINSTON-SALEM – The Wilson Prep Academy Tigers defended the NCHSAA 1A Men’s Championship in dramatic fashion on Friday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum with a 65-63 win over Corvian Community. 

Corvian’s Adrian Scott made one of two free throws with four seconds left in the fourth quarter to take a 63-62 lead. On the ensuing play, Leslie Minter fired off a would-be buzzer-beating 3-pointer that missed the mark, but he was fouled on the play and made all three free throws to take back the lead. 

The Cardinals had .6 seconds left and found a look, but it bounced off the rim as the horn sounded. 

Wilson Prep’s Ben Ferguson, who finished with 32 points and seven rebounds, was named the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player for the game. Brandon Anderson, who had nine points and five rebounds, was named the West Most Outstanding Player.

Corvian Community’s Jack Hudson was named the East Most Outstanding Player for his eight-point, 17-rebound performance. R.J. Moore led the Cardinals with 20 points in the game. 

The win gives Wilson Prep its third state title, as they won last season and in 2021. The Tigers finished the 23-24 campaign 27-5. The Cardinals finished the year 27-4.

The 2024 NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award winners for the 1A Men’s Basketball Championship were Malachi McCutcheon from Corvian Community and Xavier Williams from Wilson Prep.

Cherokee Rolls to First Title Since 1996, Tops East Columbus

WINSTON-SALEM – The Cherokee Lady Braves brought the pressure early and rolled to a 74-32 win against East Columbus on Friday night at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. 

Cherokee opened the game with a 15-3 run and never looked back, forcing 30 turnovers and picking up 18 steals along the way. The Lady Braves led 36-28 at the break and turned up the pressure even more in the third quarter, outscoring the Gators 26-2. 

The Lady Braces were led by Cecily “dvdaya” Swimmer as she had 17 points, five steals and four assists. She was named the Kay Yow Most Valuable Player for her performance in the game. Joscelyn Stamper also had 17 points, 14 rebounds and six steals and was named West Most Outstanding Player. 

For the Gators, Malia Graham had 10 points and six rebounds and was named the East Most Outstanding Player. East Columbus finished the year 26-2, losing only to East Bladen, who they beat in the Eastern Regional Finals, and the Lady Braves. 

The Lady Braves finished the 2023-24 season 29-1, losing only to the Choctaw Central Warriors of Philadelphia, Miss. 

The win gave Cherokee its second Women’s Basketball Championship in its third appearance. The Lady Braves last won in 1996.

Reidsville Completes Perfect Season, Tops Farmville Central in Overtime 78-77

WINSTON-SALEM – The Reidsville Rams outlasted the Farmville Central Jaguars in overtime to finish the season as undefeated 2A NCHSAA Men’s Basketball State Champions on Saturday night at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. 

The 2024 Championship Game was a rematch of the 2023 Final, which Farmville Central won.

On Saturday, Farmville Central forced overtime as Mykal “MJ” Williams hit a 3-pointer with seven seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 70-70. In the extra frame, Williams put the Jaguars ahead 77-76 with 56 seconds left with a layup, but with 17 seconds left, Reidsville’s Dionte Neal responded with a layup of his own to take the lead back 78-77.

Farmville Central’s final attempt at the buzzer bounced off to seal the win for Reidsville. 

The Rams were led by 29 points from Johnniyus Sharpe Jr., and he was named the West Most Outstanding Player in the game. Kendre Harrison added 19 points on 12 shots, 13 rebounds and five blocks. Harris was awarded the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player Award for his performance. 

Williams, who finished the game with 23 points, was named Most Outstanding Player for the East. Farmville Central’s Alex Moye added 22 points and 12 rebounds. 

Reidsville finished the year 29-0 and is now 5-1 all-time in the NCHSAA Championship Games. Reidsville won its first title 100 years ago in 1924 and won its other championships in 1973, 1994, and 2003. 

The Jaguars finished the season 30-2 and is now 8-3 in Championship Games.

North Pitt Knocks Off East Burke 72-60

WINSTON-SALEM – The North Pitt Panthers won their fourth NCHSAA Women’s Basketball Championship with a  72-60 win against the East Burke Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. 

The Panthers took the lead in the first quarter and never trailed the rest of the way, though the Cavaliers kept within striking distance for most of the Championship. 

North Pitt was led by Jordan Speller’s 27-point, 10-rebound performance. Speller also had four assists, three steals, and a pair of blocks and was named the Kay Yow Most Outstanding Player of the game. 

Zamareya Jones also had a double-double for the Panthers as she posted 21 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. She was named the East Most Outstanding Player for her performance. 

For the Cavaliers, Kara Brinkley had a game-high 28 points and 19 rebounds. She went 9-for-15 from the floor and 9-of-11 from the stripe and was named the West Most Outstanding Player. 

North Pitt finished the season 29-3 and gave East Burke its only loss of the year, as the Cavaliers finished the year 31-1.

North Pitt adds the 2024 Championship to their titles in 1972, 2016 and 2018. Friday was the first appearance in the Championship Game for the Cavaliers.

Central Cabarrus Goes Back-to-back with a 90-62 Win Against Seventy-First

WINSTON-SALEM – The Central Cabarrus Vikings finished off a perfect 33-0 season and defended their 2023 State Championship by beating Seventy-Frist 90-62 in Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum Friday night.

The Vikings jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in the game. Central Cabarrus had built a 28-11 lead by the end of the first quarter and led by as many as 31 in the fourth. 

Central Cabarrus was led by 22 points from Josh Dalton, a 6-foot-9 senior, and he was named the West Most Outstanding Player for his performance. Desmond Kent Jr., added 20 points and nine rebounds and was named the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player of the game.

Chase Daniel added 14 points and eight assists, and his twin brother Carson Daniel had 13 and seven assists.

For Seventy-First, Jaquez Foster had a team-high 15 points and Mylon Campbell added 14 points, six assists and six rebounds. Campbell was named the East Most Outstanding Player.

The Falcons finished the season 28-3 and are now 0-5 in State Championship Games.

West Rowan Pulls Away from Terry Sanford 64-52

WINSTON-SALEM – The West Rowan Falcons successfully defended their 2023 NCHSAA Championship with a 64-52 win against Terry Sanford on Friday at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Bulldogs led by two points at the break, but the Falcons took the lead in the third quarter and outscored Terry Sanford 23-14 in the fourth quarter to pull away. Lauren Arnold powered the Falcons with 17 points and 17 rebounds and was named the Kay Yow Most Valuable Player for her efforts.

Emma Clark added 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Falcons and was named the West Most Outstanding Player. Tiara Thompson was West Rowan’s leading scorer with 18 points and she also had eight rebounds. The Falcons out-rebounded Terry Sanford 49-31 in the game.

For Terry Sanford, Breonna Roaf had a team-high 18 points and dished out seven assists. She was named the East Most Outstanding Player. 

West Rowan is now 2-0 in NCHSAA Championship Games while Terry Sanford is now 0-4. The Falcons finished the 2023-24 season 31-1 while the Bulldogs were 26-6.

North Mecklenburg Outlasts New Hanover for 4A Crown

WINSTON-SALEM – The North Mecklenburg Vikings topped the New Hanover Wildcats 57-47 on Saturday night at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum to claim their third NCHSAA Men’s Basketball State Championship.

The Vikings led for 31 and a half of the 32 minutes in the game and were powered by Isaiah Evans, who played all 32 minutes. Evans led all scorers with 23 points and he added eight rebounds. He was named the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player for his performance on the night. 

Chadlyn Traylor added 15 points on seven shots and was named the Most Outstanding Player for the West. 

For the Wildcats, Rodmik Allen was named the Most Outstanding Player for the East as he socred 13 points and had two rebounds and two steals. Parker Crittenden led New Hanover in scoring with 14 and Nolan Billings added 10 and eight boards. 

The Vikings finished the season 30-3 and won their third title but only the second Championship Game as their last title came in the Covid-19 shortened playoffs. The Regionals had been completed but not Championship Game was held and Co-Champs were declared.

New Hanover finished the year 32-1.

Rolesville Comes Back and Beats Charlotte Catholic 65-58

WINSTON-SALEM – A ferocious fourth-quarter rally propelled the Rolesville Rams to their first 4A Women’s Basketball State Championship on Saturday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Rams outscored the Charlotte Catholic Cougars 28-14 in the fourth quarter to win 65-58.

The Cougars led by two at the break and seven at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Rams cranked up their defensive pressure and turned steals into fast-break layups. For the game, Rolesville had 16 transition points compared to just four from the Cougars. 

The Rams were led by point guard Caitlyn Jones, who scored 27 points and seven assists. She was named the Kay Yow Most Valuable Player for her performance in the game. Camryn Lee had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Kayla Bush scored seven points and nine boards. Bush was named the Most Outstanding Player for the East.

Blanca Thomas had 16 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks for the Cougars and was named the Most Outstanding Player for the West. Gracynn Gough added 15 points and six rebounds. 

Rolesville finished the season 27-5 and is now 1-0 in the Championship Finals. Charlotte Catholic also finished the season 27-5.
