WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) held the 2020 3A Indoor Track and Field State Championships at the JDL Fast Track to close out the indoor season. The Cuthbertson women claimed the program’s fourth straight 3A Indoor Track Team State Championship while the Weddington men earned their third straight 3A title.

Eastern Guilford’s Zariyah Black impressed, winning Most Outstanding Performer honors for the 3A women’s meet. Black set a new 3A state meet record in the 55 meter hurdles, clipping the tape in 7.96 seconds, eclipsing the time of Alexis Patterson from Parkland in 2019 who finished the event in 8.03 seconds. Black also placed first in the 55 meter dash posting a time of 7.05 seconds in the finals.

On the men’s side, field performer Jieem Bullock from North Brunswick was the star of the meet. Bullock claimed victory in the high jump and long jump on his way to being named the 3A men’s meet Most Outstanding Performer. Bullock cleared 6’04” in the high jump and 22’07” in the long jump.

The Cuthbertson women cruised to victory in the meet, posting event wins in two of the three relay events. The Cavalier relays took victory in the 4 X 200 meter relay, finishing in a time of 1:43.19. They also took first in the 4 X 400 meter relay, combining for a time of 4:04.42. The lone individual championship win for Cuthbertson came in the pole vault as Ava Studney leaped 11’00” to win the event.

Of note in the women’s event, the Chapel Hill 4 X 800 relay team set a new 3A state meet record as the Tigers raced to a time of 9:30.01. The Tigers needed a record-breaking performance, as second place Marvin Ridge also came in under the previous mark of 9:34.34 set by the Cuthbertson quartet from a year ago.

Weddington men were led by individual event wins in the 1600 meter run, the shot put and the pole vault. Warrior pole vaulter, Nick Callis, flew over 15’00” to win the state title. Alec Mock tossed the shot put 55’10.75” to win that event. Jake Toomey rolled to a time of 4:23.97 to grab the victory in the 1600 meter run.

The men’s meet had another notable performer, as Terrell Robinson, Jr. established a new 3A state meet record in the 55 meter dash. Robinson sprinted to a time of 6.32 seconds, trimming a few hundredths off of the previous record of 6.35 seconds shared by Kadarius Lotharp from Sun Valley in 2016 and Jaylen Wright from Southern Lee in 2019.
