RALEIGH - The Fuquay-Varina Bengals absorbed Myers Park pressure most of the day, particularly in the first half, before an attempted clearance clanged off Kaitlyn Laux and into the Mustang net, putting Fuquay-Varina up 1-0 in the 42ndminute. The Bengals did not look back on their way to the first state championship victory in women’s soccer program history.
RALEIGH – The Chapel Hill Tigers entered the state championship game for the second time in school history having given up only two goals all season. That number did not increase as the Tigers kept a clean sheet in the state finals on their way to the program’s second state championship in a 1-0 win over Cox Mill.
RALEIGH – First Flight fell behind early, conceding a goal in the 8thminute to Lake Norman Charter’s Ayden Yates, but the Nighthawks stormed back, scoring six goals in the final 46 minutes of the game to claim the program’s second state championship in women’s soccer with a 6-1 victory.
RALEIGH – Union Academy scored three goals in six minutes of the first half to jump on top of the defending 1A Champion Franklin Academy 3-0 on their way to a 6-1 victory and their first women’s soccer state championship. The Cardinals tacked on three more goals in the second half to stretch their advantage and cruise to the win.
1A Men’s Soccer Championship: Bishop McGuinness takes first crown with a 2-0 decision over Franklin Academy
RALEIGH – Franklin Academy dominated the possession and game for the majority of the first half, but a 33rd minute counter-attack strike lifted Bishop McGuinness to a 1-0 lead and eventually their first Men’s Soccer State Championship.
CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) finalized and released the playoff brackets for the 2017 Men’s Soccer Championships. The tournament will have four classifications of play with six playoff rounds each. The 1A and 4A brackets will field a complement of 48 teams each with 2A and 3A brackets fielding 64 teams each.
