36th Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day – February 2, 2022

In a landmark year for women in sports, the 50th anniversary celebration of the passage of Title IX, it is especially fitting to highlight an annual remembrance of the impact, leadership, and accomplishments of women and girls in sport.

February 2, 2022, is the 36th annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD), which began in 1987 as a day of recognition in our nation’s Capital. The day in 1987 served as a remembrance of Olympic volleyball player, Flo Hyman, for her athletic achievements and edication to promoting equality for women’s sports. Hyman had passed in 1986 of Marfan’s Syndrome.

Since that initial day NGWSD has brought together premier organizations and elite female athletes to bring national attention to girls and women in sports while acknowledging the accomplishments of female athletes, the positive influence of sports participation, and to highlight the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.

The NCHSAA is home to nearly 100,000 female athletes, coaches, and athletic administrators annually. These participants are a part of the over 3.4 million female student-athletes across the country that participate in athletics at the high school level, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

This year, the NFHS celebrates 50 Years of Title IX and announced today that the Federation will host a virtual summit on May 1-3 titled “Women and Sports Leadership Summit,” which will feature prominent women in sports including Dr. Jen Welter, the first female NFL Coach, Violet Palmer, an NCAA and NBA Basketball Official, and others are the keynote presenters for the event. Registration is open now and more information is available through this link

NGWSD is powered by the Women’s Sports Foundation, supported by its team of champion athletes and celebrated throughout the year by schools and community-serving organizations across the 50 states. Learn more here and follow the hashtag #NGWSD and #TitleIX50 on social media.
