CHAPEL HILL— Dr. Diane Frost, superintendent of the Asheboro city schools, will serve as president of the North Carolina High School Board of Directors for the 2007-08 academic year.
Frost will serve as the Association president for her one-year term, replacing Vann Pennell, the principal of South Brunswick High School. Pennell will serve in the role of past president.
Dr. Bill Harrison, superintendent of the Cumberland County schools, will be vice-president for the coming year.
Dr. Frost has been superintendent in Asheboro since 2000 but has served in a variety of capacities in that district since 1991. Prior to that, she had worked for the State Department of Public Instruction for a year and taught math at Ragsdale and Eastern Guilford High Schools from 1986 to 1990.
Before coming to North Carolina, the graduate of the University of Nebraska taught high school math and coached both golf and volleyball at two different Nebraska high schools for a total of nine years.
She earned her doctorate at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in curriculum and instruction in 1995.
In community affairs, she has been active with the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce, the Asheboro Rotary Club and is an elder at the First Presbyterian Church. She has also served as chairperson of the Ferree Foundation Board of Trustees and on the Randolph Hospital Planning Board.
New members of the Board include Brooks Matthews, principal at Triton High School, representing Region 4 and 3-A; Chris Norman, athletic director at Shelby High School, representing Region 6 and 2-A; Bobby Guthrie of the Wake County Schools, representing Region 3 and 4-A; Stewart Hobbs, superintendent of Sampson County schools representing Region 2 and 1-A; Patti Hamler, principal of Pasquotank High School, representing Region 1 and 2-A; Chris Skabo, athletic director at West Wilkes High School, representing Region 7 and 1-A; Page Carver, principal at Ashbrook High School, representing Region 6 and 3-A; and Teresa Coleman, athletic director at West Bladen High School, representing Region 4 and 2-A
Board members are recommended by the NCHSAA’s Nominating Committee, based on the requirements of the Association’s constitution and by-laws. The member schools at eight regional meetings select nominees for consideration across the state, then s individuals are selected by the Nominating Committee to fill the available slots from among those nominee. As is customary, the membership approved the new members at the Annual Meeting in May.
” We believe that we will continue to have outstanding leadership,” said NCHSAA executive director Charlie Adams. “We certainly look forward to Diane Frost stepping into the role as president and we feel sure that she will give us the same sort of great direction we have gotten from previous presidents. Diane has certainly been a valuable member of the Board, is an excellent thinker and has a very solid athletic background.
“We are also really excited about the caliber of people who will be joining the Board of Directors, which should help us to maintain an outstanding Board to serve our membership.”
