CHAPEL HILL—The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has announced the final standings in the Wachovia Conference Cup competition for the 2006-2007 academic year.
The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by Wachovia and sanctioned by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performance within their respective athletic conferences. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
The Wachovia Conference Cup—formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy—is a companion to the Wachovia Cup, a statewide award give to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each of the four classifications.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification.
Class 1-A Conference Results
Albemarle 1-A: For the second year in a row, Manteo took the conference cup with championships in baseball and softball. Camden took second place in the conference and finished second baseball. Conference standings: Manteo 60.5, Camden 50.5, Gates 40 and Perquimans 38.
Atlantic 1-A: After finishing second last season, Williamston passed Plymouth for first overall with titles in baseball and softball. Plymouth took second in baseball. Conference standings: Williamston 53.5, Plymouth 50, Southside 48.5, Northside 42.5 and Roanoke 33.5.
Carolina 1-A: Rosewood sealed the deal with a top finish in men’s track. Titles in golf and softball led North Johnston to second overall in the conference. Conference standings: Rosewood 59, North Johnston 57.5, Princeton 47, Ayden-Grifton 46.5, Spring Creek 32 and North Duplin 22.
Coastal Plains 1-A: Topsail took the Conference Cup and had another terrific season with first-place finishes in baseball, golf, women’s track and tennis. Dixon followed in second place with a first-place finish in soccer. Conference standings: Topsail 772.5, Dixon 692.5, East Carteret 687.5, Lejeune 537.5, Pamlico 435 and Jones Senior 350.
Northwest 1-A: Bishop McGuinness took the conference title again this year and finished the season with a championship in soccer. Mount Airy and South Stokes ended up in a deadlock for second. Mount Airy finished first in tennis while South Stokes placed first in baseball and men’s track. Conference standings: Bishop McGuinness 122, Mount Airy 99, South Stokes 99, East Surry 96, West Wilkes 94, Elkin 80.5, East Wilkes 78.5, North Stokes 64 and Alleghany 56.
Smoky Mountain 1-A: After finishing in a tie last season, Hayesville pulled ahead of Swain with a championship in golf and second-place finishes in women’s track and softball. Swain finished second overall and took first place finishes in women’s track and softball. Conference standings: Hayesville 165.5, Swain 159, Murphy 157.5, Robbinsville 142.5, Rosman 116.5, Andrews 105.5, Cherokee 99.5, Hiwassee Dam 89.5, Blue Ridge 59.5, Highlands 50.5 and Nantahala 32.5.
Super Six 1-A: Union held on to the lead with a conference title in women’s track and a tie for first in softball. Wallace-Rose Hill took second place in the conference and had second-place finishes in women’s track and golf. Conference standings: Union 95.5, Wallace-Rose Hill 90.5, James Kenan 82, Hobbton 78, Lakewood 75.5 and Midway 75.5.
Tar Roanoke 1-A: Louisburg flew by the competition to win the Conference Cup, taking league titles in baseball, softball and golf. Top finishes in tennis and men’s track helped Southeast Halifax hold on to second place. Conference standings: Louisburg 610, Southeast Halifax 460, Northampton-East 430, North Edgecombe 240, Northampton-West 240 and Weldon 210.
Tideland Athletic 1-A: A conference championship in softball helped Jamesville slip past Columbia for first overall. Columbia took a second-place finish in softball. Conference standings: Jamesville 29, Columbia 27.5, Bear Grass 22, Mattamuskeet 21, Cape Hatteras 17.5 and Creswell 13.
Yadkin Valley 1-A: After leading the entire year Chatham Central closed the deal with top finishes in baseball, women’s track and women’s soccer. Jordan-Matthews finished second in the league with titles in men’s and women’s tennis and golf. Conference standings: Chatham Central 166, Jordan-Matthews 157, East Montgomery 132, West Montgomery 129.5, South Davidson 127, North Moore 125.5 and Thomasville 109.
Class 1-A/2-A Conference Results
Mid-State 1-A/2-A: Cardinal Gibbons swept the conference with championships in tennis, track, golf and women’s soccer. Second place went to Cedar Ridge, which had a top finish in baseball. Conference standings: Cardinal Gibbons 139, Cedar Ridge 107.5, North Carolina School of Science and Math 93, Orange 92.5, Northwood 92, Durham School of the Arts 82.5, Graham 64.5, Raleigh Charter 56 and Cummings 50.
Rocky River 1-A/2-A: Mount Pleasant recorded a league title in softball to clench the top spot in the conference. After winning the Conference Cup last year West Stanly finished in second place this year with top finishes in baseball, women’s soccer and tennis. Conference standings: Mount Pleasant 118.5, West Stanly 112.5, Forest Hills 104, North Stanly 100.5, Albemarle 97.5, South Stanly 86.5, Gray Stone Day 74.5, Monroe 62.5 and Central Academy 19.
Southern Piedmont 1-A/2-A: East Lincoln and West Lincoln were deadlocked at the end of the winter season, but East pulled away to take the conference crown with a strong spring showing. Conference standings: East Lincoln 274, West Lincoln 252, North Lincoln 242, South Iredell 236, Lincolnton 232, Cherryville 228, Highland School of Technology 193,and Bessemer City 150.
Southeastern 1-A/2-A: After finishing second last season, East Bladen was able to pass the competition for first overall with championships in softball and football. St. Pauls was able to take the second place spot with league titles in tennis and men’s and women’s track. Conference standings: East Bladen 54, St Pauls 49.5, West Bladen 48, Fairmont 35, West Columbus 32, South Robeson 31 and Red Springs 30.5.
Waccamaw 1-A/2-A: South Brunswick took first place in the conference, recording championships in women’s soccer, men’s golf and women’s track. Whiteville was runner-up in the league with a first-place finish in baseball. Conference standings: South Brunswick 131.8, Whiteville 114, Pender 91.5, North Brunswick 81.3, Heide Trask 71.8, South Columbus 69.5 and East Columbus 62.
Western Highlands 1-A/2-A: Conference championships in baseball, golf and men’s and women’s track helped Polk County clinch the top spot. Charles D. Owen followed in second with top finishes in baseball and softball. Conference standings: Polk County 185.5, Owen 171.5, Hendersonville 152.5, Mountain Heritage 145, Avery 127, Madison 106.5 and Mitchell 99.
Class 2-A Conference Results
Central Carolina 2-A: Top finishes in golf and baseball led Ledford past the competition for the conference title. Salisbury took second with championships in women’s track and tennis. Conference standings: Ledford 150, Salisbury 145.5, East Davidson 128.5, Central Davidson 124.5, West Davidson 123, North Rowan 116.5 and Lexington 82.
East Central 2-A: With a championship in tennis, East Duplin extended its lead over Richlands to clench first place. Richlands finished with the conference title in golf. Conference standings: East Duplin 157.5, Richlands 148.5, Swansboro 147.5, Croatan 147, Northside 137.5, South Lenoir 136, Southwest 127 and Clinton 117.
Eastern Plains 2-A: Greene Central took the top spot in the conference while Farmville Central was the runner-up. Farmville finished strong with first-place finishes in men’s and women’s track. Conference standings: Greene Central 60.5, Farmville Central 53.5, North Lenoir 52, North Pitt 51.5, Tarboro 43 and Goldsboro 10.
Mountain Valley 2-A: After ending last season in third place, Forbush had an outstanding season with first-place finishes in baseball, softball and soccer to take the conference crown. Surry Central fell to second place and recorded a first-place tie in tennis. Conference standings: Forbush 216, Surry Central 209.5, Wilkes Central 205.5, Starmount 196.5, Ashe County 194, North Surry 192 and North Wilkes 158.5.
North State 2-A: Reidsville took the conference crown with titles in men’s track and soccer. West Stokes maintained second place and tied for first in tennis. Conference standings: Reidsville 164, West Stokes 157, McMichael 152, Eastern Guilford 130.5, Southern Guilford 112 and Atkins 65.5.
Northern Carolina 2-A: After battling back and forth all year, Roanoke Rapids pulled ahead of Southern Vance to take the conference crown. Roanoke Rapids took league titles in softball, soccer, golf and a tie for first in baseball while Southern Vance placed first in men’s track. Conference standings: Roanoke Rapids 168, Southern Vance 166.5, Bunn 160, Franklinton 152, Warren County 114.5 and Northwest Halifax 74.
Western Athletic 2-A: West Henderson finished the season with titles in baseball, golf, and women’s soccer. Brevard followed in second with a championship in tennis. Conference standings: West Henderson 183.5, Brevard 162, North Henderson 150, East Henderson 147, Pisgah 135 and Smoky Mountain 129.
Class 2-A/3-A Conference Results
Catawba Valley 2-A/3-A: Hickory took the conference title again this year with championships in golf and women’s soccer. St. Stephens recorded championships in baseball and women’s track to take second place in the conference. Conference standings: Hickory 217.5, St. Stephens 208, Fred T. Foard 204.5, Newton-Conover 179, Hibriten 174.5, Bandys 174, West Caldwell 149.5, Bunker Hill 148 and Maiden 133.5.
Northeastern Coastal 2-A/3-A: First Flight had another outstanding year to win the Conference Cup with first-place finishes in baseball, soccer and golf and a tie for first in tennis. Second place went to Currituck County which took second-place finishes in baseball, softball and golf. Conference standings: First Flight 193.5, Currituck County 165.5, Northeastern 156, Pasquotank 147, Edenton Holmes 136.5, Hertford County 113.5 and Bertie County 95.
Southwestern 2-A/3-A: League championships in golf and tennis led Shelby to the conference crown again this year. R-S Central placed second and took the league crown this spring in women’s track. Conference standings: Shelby 90, R-S Central 81, Kings Mountain 70.5, East Rutherford 58.5, Chase 28.5 and Burns 40.5.
Class 3-A Conference Results
Cape Fear Valley 3-A: Union Pines finished the season on top with championships in soccer and tennis. Finishing second, Harnett Central had a first-place finish in softball. Conference standings: Union Pines 239.5, Harnett Central 222, South Johnston 211, Triton 192, Gray’s Creek 186.5, Southern Lee 169, Overhills 159, and Western Harnett 138.
Eastern Carolina 3-A: Eastern Wayne and Hunt finished in a deadheat for first place. Eastern Wayne finished first in tennis and women’s track while Hunt had top finishes in soccer and men’s track. Conference standings: Eastern Wayne 183 and Wilson Hunt 183 each, C. B. Aycock 178.5, Beddingfield 147.5, Southern Wayne 138 and Kinston 109.
Mid-Piedmont 3-A: Ragsdale took the Conference Cup again this year with first place finishes in tennis, men’s and women’s track and ties for first in baseball and soccer. Southeast Guilford took second in the conference and recorded a championship in golf and a tie for first in baseball. Conference standings: Ragsdale 229, Southeast Guilford 199.5, Asheboro 199, Southwestern Randolph 176.5, Trinity 176, Eastern Randolph 172 and Randleman 135.
Mid-State 3-A: A championship in women’s soccer helped Williams take the conference title. Southern Alamance took second place overall with a first-place finish in soccer. Conference standings: Williams 84, Southern Alamance 76.5, Eastern Alamance 72.5, J. F. Webb 64.5, Northern Vance 58 and South Granville 49.5.
Mountain Athletic 3-A: T.C. Roberson grabbed the conference crown by earning league titles in men’s and women’s track, tennis and baseball. Asheville recorded a title in soccer and finished second overall. Conference standings: T. C. Roberson 239, Asheville 180, North Buncombe 144, Enka 139, Franklin 136, Tuscola 134 and Erwin 76.
New Six 3-A: After leading the entire year, Wilson Fike held on to first with championships in golf and soccer and a tie for first in softball. A first-place finish in women’s track and a tie for first in baseball elevated Rocky Mount to second place for the year. Conference standings: Wilson Fike 172, Rocky Mount 168.5, Nash Central 155.5, Southern Nash 151.5, Northern Nash 143 and SouthWest Edgecombe 121.5.
North Piedmont 3-A: Lake Norman took the conference crown this year with titles in soccer and golf. Mooresville finished second overall with championships in baseball and men’s track. Conference standings: Lake Norman 747, Mooresville 737.5, Northwest Cabarrus 690, West Rowan 595, West Iredell 585, Statesville 575, North Iredell 532.5 and Jesse Carson 390.
Piedmont Triad 3-A: Reagan narrowly missed first place while Southwest Guilford took the Conference Cup with a championship in soccer and a tie for first in baseball. Reagan had a tie for first in softball during spring competition. Conference standings: Southwest Guilford 79, Reagan 77.5, Glenn 71, High Point Andrews 56.5, Parkland 52.5 and Carver 22.5.
South Piedmont 3-A: Porter Ridge rose to first place in the conference with championships in golf, soccer and softball. Concord slipped to second overall with a tie for first place in tennis. Conference standings: Porter Ridge 750, Concord 745, A. L. Brown 652.5, Parkwood 652.5, Sun Valley 632.5, Piedmont 604.5 and Anson 502.5.
Triad 3-A: Western Guilford pulled away from Rockingham County to take the Conference Cup by virtue of first-place finishes in soccer and women’s track. Championships in golf and baseball helped Rockingham County hold on to the runner-up spot. Conference standings: Western Guilford 89.5, Rockingham County 83.5, Morehead 78, Northeast Guilford 77.5, Western Alamance 74.5, Dudley 48.5 and Bartlett Yancey 40.
Class 3-A/4-A Conference Results
Big South 3-A/4-A: Ashbrook narrowly passed Forestview to take first place overall with top finishes in men’s tennis and men’s and women’s track. Forestview had championships in men’s golf and tennis. Conference standings: Ashbrook 194.5, Forestview 192.5, East Gaston 182, Crest 175, South Point 163.5, North Gaston 141 and Hunter Huss 136.5.
Coastal Conference 3-A/4-A: J. H. Rose slipped into second place while New Bern took the conference crown with a great spring, winning championships in golf, women’s soccer, men’s track and tennis. A sole championship in women’s track put Rose in second place overall. Conference standings: New Bern 220.5, J. H. Rose 217.5, Havelock 177, D. H Conley 174.5, South Central 173.5, West Carteret 171.5, Washington 152.5 and West Craven 109.
Mid-Eastern 3-A/4-A: Hoggard clinched the conference title with a top finish in tennis. New Hanover followed in second place, winning top honors in the league in men’s golf. Conference standings: Hoggard 102, New Hanover 97, Laney 89, Ashley 75, Jacksonville 68, White Oak 62 and West Brunswick 38.
Queen City 3-A/4-A: Charlotte Catholic defended its conference title successfully and finished this season with championships in golf, tennis, soccer and baseball. Second-place finishes in golf, soccer and baseball put Olympic in second place. Conference standings: Charlotte Catholic 118.5, Olympic 86.5, West Mecklenburg 82.5, Harding University 79.5, Berry Academy 54.5, E. E. Waddell 46 and Garinger 34.5.
Class 4-A Conference Results:
CAP Seven 4-A: Broughton took first place overall, recording a top finish in golf. Leesville Road finished in second place with championships in baseball and women’s soccer. Conference standings: Broughton 112, Leesville Road 98, Millbrook 77.5, Wakefield 76, Sanderson 70.5, Enloe 66 and Wake Forest-Rolesville 63.
Central Piedmont 4-A: Mount Tabor slipped past West Forsyth by just a half-point for the Conference Cup. Mount Tabor finished first in women’s track and tied for first in soccer, while West Forsyth had titles in men’s tennis and baseball. Conference standings: Mount Tabor 160.5, West Forsyth 160, R. J. Reynolds 139, Davie County 125.5, North Davidson 121, East Rowan 121 and South Rowan 104.
Greater Neuse 4-A: Championships in golf and tennis led Clayton to the conference crown. Following in second place, Southeast Raleigh finished first in soccer, men’s and women’s track. Conference standings: Clayton 262.5, Southeast Raleigh 257.5, Garner 230, West Johnston 210.5, Knightdale 208.5, Smithfield-Selma 206.5, East Wake 177.5 and Holly Springs 156.
ME-CA Six 4-A: North Mecklenburg swept the conference crown with championships in baseball, golf, women’s soccer and men’s tennis. Hopewell followed in second with a runner-up finish in golf. Conference standings: North Mecklenburg 178.5, Hopewell 158.5, Central Cabarrus 154.5, Vance 153.5, Jay Robinson 146 and West Charlotte 121.
Metro 4-A: First-place finishes in women’s track, baseball and soccer helped propel Northwest Guilford to the conference crown this year. Grimsley finished second, earning championships in tennis and soccer. Conference standings: Northwest Guilford 110, Grimsley 94, East Forsyth 87, Page 81.5, High Point Central 66.5, North Forsyth 47 and B. L. Smith 38.
Mid-Southeastern 4-A: After battling back and forth this year, Pinecrest beat out Jack Britt for first place. Pinecrest finished with titles in men’s track, soccer and golf and Jack Britt had a top finish in softball. Conference standings: Pinecrest 108, Jack Britt 106, Scotland County 89.5, Richmond Senior 75, Seventy-First 71, Hoke County 68, Westover 41 and Douglas Byrd 38.5.
Northwestern 4-A: Watauga took first place overall with conference titles in tennis and men’s and women’s track and field. Freedom settled into second place with a top finish in golf. Conference standings: Watauga 100, Freedom 94, A. C. Reynolds 90.5, South Caldwell 70, East Burke 64.5, McDowell 59.5 and Alexander Central 55.5.
PAC-Six 4-A: Chapel Hill cruised past the competition again this year for the Conference Cup and finished the season with top finishes in softball and lacrosse. Riverside squeezed past Jordan for second place and finished first in golf. Conference standings: Chapel Hill 130, Riverside 109.5, Jordan 109, East Chapel Hill 100, Northern Durham 97, Person 61.5, Hillside 41.5 and Southern Durham 29.5.
Southwestern 4-A: Providence successfully defended its Conference Cup and finished the season with titles in soccer and tennis. David Butler was second and finished the season with championships in men’s and women’s track, baseball and softball. Conference standings: Providence 189.5, Myers Park 179.5, Weddington 174, David Butler 163.5, Ardrey Kell 137.5, South Mecklenburg 152, East Mecklenburg 133.5 and Independence 121.5.
Tri-Eight 4-A: Apex had an outstanding spring season with conference crowns in women’s track, soccer and lacrosse. Championships in golf and men’s track weren’t quite enough for Green Hope to pass Apex for first place. Conference standings: Apex 149.5, Green Hope 147, Athens Drive 126, Cary 104, Middle Creek 99.5, Fuquay-Varina 75.5, Lee County 56.5 and Panther Creek 45.
Two Rivers 4-A: After leading the entire year,Terry Sanford sealed the deal with a league title in men’s tennis. South View finished second overall with a first-place finish in baseball. Conference standings: Terry Sanford 86, South View 82, Pinecrest 71, Lumberton 66, Cape Fear 58.5, Smith 49.5 and Purnell Swett 35.
