CHAPEL HILL—The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has announced the winter standings in the Wachovia Conference Cup competition for the 2005-2006 academic year.
The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by Wachovia and sanctioned by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performance within their respective athletic conferences. Wachovia has
sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
The Wachovia Conference Cup—formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy—is a companion to the Wachovia Cup, a statewide award give to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each of the four classifications.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification.
Class 1-A Conference Results
Albemarle 1-A: Manteo held on to first place with a conference championship in men’s basketball. Camden secured second place again by taking first in women’s basketball. Conference standings: Manteo 67.5, Camden 58, Perquimans 47.5, Gates 45, Cape Hatteras 41.5, Columbia 30 and Creswell 27.
Atlantic Eight 1-A: Williamston continues to lead with third-place finishes in men’s and women’s basketball. Roanoke overtook Southside, Bear Grass and Jamesville to secure second place in the league with a second-place finish in men’s basketball. Conference standings: Williamston 55.5, Roanoke 53, Southside 49.5, Bear Grass 49, Plymouth 46.5, Jamesville 41, Northside 37.5 and Mattamuskeet 35.
Carolina 1-A: North Johnston maintains first place with a conference championship in men’s indoor track and second-place finishes in men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling and women’s indoor track. Rosewood continues to hold second with conference championships in wrestling, women’s basketball and women’s indoor track. Conference standings: North Johnston 38.5, Rosewood 36, Spring Creek 27, Ayden-Griftom18.5, Princeton 18 and North Duplin 11.
Coastal Plains 1-A: Topsail broke the tie with East Carteret in the fall standings to take first place with conference championships in men’s basketball and wrestling. East Carteret fell to second with a first-place finish in women’s basketball. Conference standings: Topsail 432.5, East Carteret 410, Dixon 395, Lejeune 362.5, Pamlico 235 and Jones Senior 200.
Northwest 1-A: A first place finish in women’s basketball and third place in men’s and women’s swimming helped Bishop McGuinness hold on to the top spot. Mount Airy’s first-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming allowed it to inch closer to first. Conference standings: Bishop McGuinness 71, Mount Airy 68.5, East Surry 67, South Stokes 54 Elkin 53, West Wilkes 51.5, North Stokes 44, Alleghany 42.5 and East Wilkes 36.5.
Smoky Mountain 1-A: A third-place finish in wrestling enabled Hayesville to take the lead. Murphy fell to second place, finishing fourth in wrestling. Super Six 1-A: The three-way tie for first after the fall sports was broken with Wallace-Rose Hill landing on top after taking top honors in men’s basketball. James Kenan follows in second. Conference standings: Wallace-Rose Hill 50, James Kenan 48, Union 45.5, Hobbton 35.5, Lakewood 30.5 and Midway 29.5.
Tar Roanoke 1-A: Louisburg maintained its lead on the field, and Southwest Halifax held on to second place with a first-place finish in women’s basketball. Conference standings: Louisburg 305, Southwest Halifax 285, Northampton-East 235, North Edgecombe 195, Northampton-West 160 and Weldon 155.
Yadkin Valley 1-A: Chatham Central now leads the conference after capturing the league crown in wrestling and a tie for first in women’s basketball. Thomasville used its first-place finish in men’s basketball and a tie for first in women’s basketball to edge past West Montgomery for second. Conference standings: Chatham Central 89.5, Thomasville 81, West Montgomery 80.5, Jordan-Matthews 80, South Davidson 74.5, North Moore 71.5 and East Montgomery 71.
Class 1-A/2-A Conference Results:
Mid-State 1-A/2-A: Cardinal Gibbons continues to lead the league after conference crowns in men’s and women’s swimming and a tie for first place in women’s basketball. Cedar Ridge follows in second with a second-place spot in wrestling. Conference standings: Cardinal Gibbons 78.5, Cedar Ridge 58, Orange 54.5, Northwood 49, Durham School of the Arts 49, Graham 34.5, Raleigh Charter 29.5 and Cummings 29.
Rocky River 1-A/2-A: West Stanly outdistanced North Stanly once again with a first-place finish in women’s swimming and a second-place finish in women’s basketball. A conference championship in women’s basketball and second place in women’s swimming kept North Stanly in second. Conference standings: West Stanly 62, North Stanly 54.5, Albemarle 48.5, Mount Pleasant 48, Monroe 41, Forest Hills 41, South Stanly 39 and Gray Stone 20.
Southeastern 1-A/2/A: East Bladen had another great season and is still leading after taking the top spot in women’s basketball. St. Pauls barely held on to second with a fourth-place finish in women’s basketball. Conference standings: East Bladen 31, St. Pauls 24.5, Fairmont 24, West Bladen 24, Red Springs 22, West Columbus 15.5 and South Robeson 7.
Southern Piedmont 1-A/2-A: North Lincoln moved into first place and East Lincoln is now in second after the winter sports season. Conference standings: North Lincoln 162, East Lincoln 158, Lincolnton 156, West Lincoln 152, South Iredell 143, Cherryville 134, Highland Tech 102 and Bessemer City 66.
Waccamaw 1-A/2-A: A conference championship in women’s basketball and a second-place finish in men’s basketball put Whiteville in the lead. Pender advanced to second with third-place finishes in men’s and women’s basketball. Conference standings: Whiteville 39.5, Pender 36, North Brunswick 34.5, Heide Trask 34, South Brunswick 33, East Columbus 30 and South Columbus 27.5.
Western Highlands 1-A/2-A: Polk County improved to first place after taking third in men’s basketball. Charles D. Owen is in second after finishing fifth in men’s basketball. Conference standings: Polk County 100.5, Charles D. Owen 96.5, Hendersonville 92.5, Mountain Heritage 92.5, Avery 81.5, Mitchell 68 and Madison 64.5.
Class 2-A Conference Results:
Central Carolina 2-A: Ties for first in wrestling and women’s basketball moved North Rowan ahead of Salisbury. Salisbury had a tie for first place in women’s basketball and a tie for second in men’s basketball. Conference standings: North Rowan 88, Salisbury 86, Ledford 83, Central Davidson 79.5, West Davidson 74, East Davidson 65 and Lexington 51.5.
East Central 2-A: A strong winter season moved Southwest Onslow into first place in the conference race with East Duplin second, just ahead of Richlands. Conference standings: Southwest Onslow 43, East Duplin 38, Richlands 37, Clinton 35, Northside (Onslow) 35, Croatan 34.5, South Lenoir 29 and Swansboro 28.5.
Eastern Plains 2-A: Farmville Central clinched first place with top finishes in women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track. Greene Central landed in second place after taking the league wrestling crown. Conference standings: Farmville Central 39, Greene Central 33.5, North Pitt 28, North Lenoir 24, Tarboro 20.5 and Goldsboro 18.
Mountain Valley 2-A: First-place finishes in women’s basketball and men’s swimming enabled Wilkes Central to slip past Surry Central for first place. Surry Central recorded a conference championship in women’s swimming. Conference standings: Wilkes Central 133.5, Surry Central 132.5, Forbush 128.5, North Surry 117.5, Starmount 114.5, Ashe County 110 and North Wilkes 98.5.
North State 2-A: West Stokes held on to first place with a runner-up finish in wrestling. McMichael advanced to second after taking top honors in wrestling. Conference standings: West Stokes 104, McMichael 101.5, Reidsville 97, Eastern Guilford 83.5, Southern Guilford 79 and Atkins 37.
Northern Carolina 2-A: Roanoke Rapids used a conference championship in men’s swimming and second place finish in women’s swimming to take over the top spot in the conference. Southern Vance is in second after a conference championship in wrestling. Conference standings: Roanoke Rapids 102, Southern Vance 98.5, Bunn 93.5, Franklinton 92, Warren County 66.5 and Northwest Halifax 42.5.
Western Athletic 2-A: Conference championships in swimming put West Henderson in first place. Brevard followed in second with a runner-up finish in men’s swimming. Conference standings: West Henderson 105.5, Brevard 103, North Henderson 92, East Henderson 92, Smoky Mountain 82 and Pisgah 77.5.
Class 2-A/3-A Conference Results:
Catawba Valley 2-A/3-A: Hickory continues to lead the conference with a first place finish in women’s basketball. St. Stephens remains in second with conference championships in women’s swimming and wrestling. Conference standings: Hickory 136.5, St. Stephens 126.5, Fred T. Foard 122, Hibriten 108, Newton-Conover 105.5, Bandys 96, Bunker Hill 83, West Caldwell 66 and Maiden 35.5.
Northeastern Coastal 2-A/3-A: First Flight, which placed second in wrestling, is still in the lead over Northeastern. Northeastern placed first in wrestling and second in men’s basketball. Conference standings: First Flight 93.5, Northeastern 88, Pasquotank 86, Currituck County 83, Hertford County 78.5, Edenton Holmes 61 and Bertie 42.
Southwestern 2-A/3-A: A top finish in men’s basketball led Shelby to first place. R-S Central fell to second with top finishes in wrestling and women’s swimming. Conference standings: Shelby 54, R-S Central 51.5, East Rutherford 44, Kings Mountain 41, Burns 23 and Chase 13.5.
Class 3-A Conference Results:
Cape Fear Valley 3-A: Another outstanding season with conference crowns in women’s swimming, men’s and women’s indoor track and wrestling helped Union Pines remain in the lead. Triton improved to second place with a conference championship in cheerleading. Conference standings: Union Pines 148, Triton 142.5, Harnett Central 139, South Johnston 128.5, Gray’s Creek 114, Western Harnett 107, Overhills 92 and Southern Lee 76.
Eastern Carolina 3-A: Hunt used its first-place finish in men’s swimming and second-place finish in women’s swimming to take the lead from C.B. Aycock. Aycock, the season with a conference championship in wrestling. Conference standings: Hunt 117, C.B. Aycock 115.5, Eastern Wayne 108.5, Southern Wayne 94.5, Beddingfield 88. and Kinston 56.5.
Mid-Piedmont 3-A: Ragsdale held on to first place with league championships in men’s and women’s swimming and wrestling. grabbed second place with a conference championship in men’s basketball. Conference standings: Ragsdale 134, Asheboro 128.5, Southeast Guilford 126.5, Trinity 121, Eastern Randolph 107, Southwestern Randolph 98 and Randleman 80.
Mid-State 3-A: A first-place finish in both men’s and women’s basketball and a tie for first in wrestling helped led Williams past Eastern Alamance again. Eastern Alamance is in second after with a first-place tie in wrestling. Conference standings: Williams 55.5, Eastern Alamance 46, Southern Alamance 42.5, J.F. Webb 38, Northern Vance 34 and South Granville 27.
Mountain Athletic 3-A: T.C. Roberson used its conference championships in men’s and women’s swimming to hold on to the top spot. Franklin topped Asheville for second place. Conference standings: T.C. Roberson 145, Franklin 101, Asheville 97, North Buncombe 90, Enka 79, Tuscola 79 and Clyde Erwin 61.
New Six 3-A: Fike moves into first with an outstanding winter season, including three conference championships in men’s and women’s swimming and wrestling, and a tie for first place in men’s basketball. Rocky Mount dropped into second, with its top winter team a tie for first in men’s basketball. Conference standings: Fike 111, Rocky Mount 107, Nash Central 95, Northern Nash 88.5, Southern Nash 88.5 and Southwest Edgecombe 75.
North Piedmont 3-A: Mooresville stretched its lead out further with a conference crown in wrestling. A first-place finish in women’s swimming and a second-place finish in men’s swimming enabled Lake Norman to hold on to second. Conference standings: Mooresville 495, Lake Norman 447.5, Northwest Columbus 445, Statesville 417.5, West Rowan 367.5, West Iredell 362.5 and North Iredell 360.
Piedmont Triad 3-A: Southwest Guilford used its first-place finish in men’s basketball and second-place finish in women’s swimming to stay on top of the league. Robert B. Glenn still follows in second after taking first in men’s basketball. Conference standings: Southwest Guilford 51, Robert B. Glenn 43.5, High Point Andrews 38.5, Ronald Reagan 38, Parkland 36 and Carver 18.
South Piedmont 3-A: A.L. Brown held on to the conference lead with second-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. Parkwood remains in second with a conference championship in women’s basketball and a tie for top honors in men’s basketball. Conference standings: A.L. Brown 457.5, Parkwood 255, Concord 425, Sun Valley 425, Porter Ridge 412.5, Piedmont 405 and Anson 255.
Triad 3-A: Northeast Guilford holds the top spot in the league, just ahead of Morehead and Western Guilford after the winter season. Conference standings: Northeast Guilford 57.5, Morehead 55.5, Western Guilford 51, Western Alamance 47, Rockingham County 46, Dudley 27 and Bartlett Yancey 12.
Class 3-A/4-A Conference Results:
Big South 3-A/4-A: Ashbrook took the lead with first-place finishes in men’s basketball and women’s swimming. Forestview landed in second with a conference championship in men’s swimming. Conference standings: Ashbrook 129, Forestview 119.5, South Point 113.5, East Gaston 108.5, Crest 107, Hunter Huss 99 and North Gaston 67.5.
Coastal 3-A/4-A: J.H. Rose had an excellent season and remains in the lead with four first-place finishes, in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming. New Bern is still holding on to second with second-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. Conference standings: J.H. Rose 147.5, New Bern 129, South Central 114, Havelock 112, West Carteret 109, D.H. Conley 102, Washington 90.5 and West Craven 52.
Mideastern 3-A/4-A: New Hanover passed J.T. Hoggard and landed in first with conference crowns in men’s and women’s basketball. Hoggard fell to second with top finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. Conference standings: New Hanover 68.5, J.T. Hoggard 64, E.A. Laney 54, White Oak 44.5, Jacksonville 42, Ashley 34.5 and West Brunswick 19.5.
Queen City 3-A/4-A: First-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming put Charlotte Catholic on top again. Harding still holds second with a first-place finish in women’s basketball. Conference standings: Charlotte Catholic 75, Harding 49.5, Olympic 49, West Mecklenburg 41, Berry Academy 34, Garinger 30.5 and Waddell 29.
Class 4-A Conference Results:
CAP 7 4-A: Leesville Road took over the league lead with first-place finishes in wrestling and gymnastics and second-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. Broughton dropped to second, finishing second in wrestling and third in gymnastics. Conference standings: Leesville Road 69.5, Broughton 68, Wakefield 58, Enloe 48, Sanderson 46.5, Millbrook 40.5 and Wake Forest-Rolesville 30.5.
Central Piedmont 4-A: With the help of conference championships in women’s basketball and women’s swimming, Mount Tabor was able to hold on to first place in the league. West Forsyth is in second after first-place finishes in men’s basketball and women’s swimming. Conference standings: Mount Tabor 107.5, West Forsyth 104.5, R.J. Reynolds 90, Davie 80, North Davidson 70, South Rowan 68.5 and East Rowan 67.5.
Greater Neuse River 4-A: Southeast Raleigh had an excellent season, earning conference crowns in women’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming, which put it on top of the league. Second place still belongs to Clayton with a first-place finish in cheerleading. Conference standings: Southeast Raleigh 139.5, Clayton 132.5, West Johnston 117.5, Smithfield-Selma 116.5, Garner 110, East Wake 91 and Knightdale 86.
ME-CA 6: North Mecklenburg had another outstanding season to clinch first place with three conference crowns in women’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming. Central Cabarrus finished first in men’s basketball and wrestling leading them to second place in the league. Conference standings: North Mecklenburg 111.5, Central Cabarrus 101.5, Hopewell 95.5, J.M. Robinson 89, Vance 84.5 and West Charlotte 73.
Metro 4-A: Northwest Guilford is still leading the points race with the help of conference crowns in women’s swimming and wrestling. Grimsley held on to second with top finishes in women’s basketball and men’s swimming. Conference standings: Northwest Guilford 68, Grimsley 60, Page 59, East Forsyth 46, High Point Central 41, North Forsyth 28 and Ben L. Smith 27.
Mid-Southeastern 4-A: Pinecrest maintained the lead it had after fall sports, aided by a co-championship in wrestling. Jack Britt is close behind in second place after sharing both the wrestling and the men’s basketball titles. Conference standings: Pinecrest 62.5, Jack Britt 60, Scotland 50, Seventy-First 49, Richmond 45.5, Hoke 38, Westover 27, Douglas Byrd 22.
Northwestern 4-A: A first-place finish in men’s basketball and a tie for first in women’s basketball led A.C. Reynolds past Freedom for first place. Freedom, which had a top finish in wrestling, now is in second. Conference standings: A.C. Reynolds 63.5, Freedom 59, Watauga 50, South Caldwell 46, East Burke 45, Alexander Central 39 and McDowell 32.5.
PAC-6 4-A: Chapel Hill held onto first with conference championships in men’s and women’s swimming. Jordan moved into second with second-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. Conference standings: Chapel Hill 70.5, Jordan 66.5, East Chapel Hill 65.5, Northern Durham 58 and Hillside 28.
Southwestern 4-A: Providence continues to lead the league with a first-place finish in women’s swimming. South Mecklenburg improved to second place with conference championships in women’s basketball and men’s swimming. Conference standings: Providence 112.5, South Mecklenburg 104, Myers Park 101.5, Butler 93, East Mecklenburg 92, Weddington 87.5 and Independence 73.5.
Tri-7 4-A: Conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball led Apex to the top spot in the league. Green Hope follows in second with a first-place finish in women’s swimming. Conference standings: Apex 71.5, Green Hope 69, Cary 66.5, Athens Drive 63, Middle Creek 55, Lee County 34.5 and Fuquay Varina 29.5.
Two Rivers 4-A: South View held on to the lead with a conference crown in women’s basketball and a second-place finish in wrestling. Terry Sanford closely follows in second with a tie for second place in women’s basketball. Conference standings: Southview 50, Terry Sanford 48.5, Pine Forest 40.5, E.E. Smith 38, Lumberton 32, Purnell Swett 21.5 and Cape Fear 18.5.
