Former Independence Coach Passes Away

CHARLOTTE—Former coach and athletic director Joe Coulter died at his home here last week at the age of 80.

Coulter, a native of Catawba County, graduated from Oxford High School there and then Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory. He was the first athletic director and head basketball coach at Independence High School in Charlotte, but he also had stints as a teacher and coach at Bunker Hill High School in Claremont and McClintock Junior High in Charlotte.

He retired from Independence in 1984 and then held several other positions, including working in insurance, with an area YMCA and then as a funeral attendant for a local funeral home.
