More Track And Field Championships Set For Weekend

SECOND WEEKEND OF NCHSAA TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPSSCHEDULED FOR IRWIN BELK TRACK AT NORTH CAROLINA A&T

       GREENSBORO — The second consecutive weekend of state track and field championships is set as the North Carolina High School Athletic Association will hold its 3-A and 4-A meets this weekend.

      The competition features 3-A championships for both men and women on Friday, and then on Saturday the 4-A championships will be held, all at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

  Action in the field events will begin at 10 am and running events will start at 11 am. It will be the 92nd annual men’s championships and the 41st annual renewal of the women’s event.

           The 1-A and 2-A meets were held last weekend.

Winterville South Central has won the last two NCHSAA state 3-A women’s team titles while Fayetteville Douglas Byrd is the defending champ on the 3-A men’s side.

In regional 3-A meets on Saturday, women’s titles went to Wilson Fike, Chapel Hill, Waxhaw Marvin Ridge and North Buncombe.  A couple of individuals to watch in the state championships, based on regional performances, could be McMichael’s Courtney Crawford and North Gaston’s Jackie Reid, both of whom won three individual regional titles.

Men’s 3-A regional team titles went to Jacksonville White Oak, Northern Guilford, Berry Academy and Asheville. Berry Academy won all four relays in the men’s Midwest Regional.

Both 4-A team championships went to Wake County schools a year agoas Raleigh Wakefield won the crown for the second year in a row while Knightdale captured the men’s title for the first time.

          Wakefield’s women won the Mideast Regional on Saturday, while other regional titles went to Southeast Raleigh, Winston-Salem Parkland and Watauga. Alexis Perry of Durham Jordan was a triple champion in the Mideast 4-A Regional. 

         Defending state champ Knightdale took top honors among men’s teams in the East Regional.  Other regional team championships went to Cary, Pfafftown Reagan and Asheville T.C. Roberson.

 The Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Greensboro Sports Commission are serving as the host city sponsors for the event. Admission to the championship each day is six dollars.
