Throughout the course of the 2008-2009 academic year, we will seek to recognize some of the great names of the past to highlight the heritage of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association in honor of the Association’s 95th anniversary. In this edition we are pleased to recognize Bob Colvin of Robbinsville.
Bob Colvin put together an unbelievable string of state championships as a head football coach.
A graduate of Robbinsville High and a 1962 graduate of Western Carolina University, Colvin returned to his high school alma mater as head football coach from 1966 through the 1985 season. His teams won an amazing 16 Smoky Mountain 1-A Conference championships during that stretch and 11 NCHSAA state 1-A titles. During that span, Colvin’s teams posted a 40-6 mark in playoff competition and won an unprecedented five straight state crowns, from 1979 through ‘83.
Robbinsville also won state football titles in 1969, ‘70, ‘73, ‘74, ‘76, and ‘77 and was runner-up in 1971.
Colvin posted a record as a head football coach of 177-52-2 during his tenure with the Black Knights and also was head women’s basketball coach for a five-year period. He coached the North Carolina team in the Shrine Bowl football game in 1980.
Bob was inducted into the NCHSAA Hall of Fame in the class of 1995.
