WINSTON-SALEM—Johnathan Gainey is leaving Winston-Salem Prep to become head women’s basketball coach at R.J. Reynolds High School, according to a report in the Winston-Salem Journal.
Gainey has been the head women’s basketball coach at Winston-Sale Prep for the past five years. The 44-year-old coach will replace Derrele Mitchell, who coached the R.J. Reynolds team for two years.
Gainey went to W-S Prep in 2004 after five years as a coach at Reynolds, coaching both junior varsity men and serving as an assistant to the women’s varsity team. He took over the women’s program for the 2008-09 season.
He is a graduate of Glenn High School and is a 12-year Army veteran who works for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
