2017 NCHSAA WOMEN’S GOLF STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP

PINEHURST – After a windy day one, conditions ripened up for the final day of competition in the 2017 NCHSAA Women’s Golf State Championships. Overcast skies and gloomy conditions gave way to beautiful sunshine and mostly calm winds for day two of the tournament.

Team scores are compiled based on the three lowest individual scores from a five-player team.

3A Men’s Basketball State Championship: Cox Mill holds off Eastern Guilford 70-66 to win their first State Championship

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Cox Mill held off Eastern Guilford 70-66 in a hard-fought battle that saw the Chargers never trail in the game on their way to their first State Championship in school history.

Chargers sophomore guard, Wendell Moore Jr. was dynamic with 29 points and 12 rebounds. He also had a trio of assists and blocks on the night on his way to being named the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player.

3A Women’s Basketball Championship: Northern Guilford hangs on to down Hickory Ridge 66-64 and win first title

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Northern Guilford returned to the 3A State Championship game for the second year in a row and held on to beat Hickory Ridge 66-64, reversing the heartbreak of one year ago and claiming the school’s first Women’s Basketball State Championship.

Northern Guilford trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half as Hickory Ridge came out on fire, shooting better than 50% from the floor in the first half. The Lady Bulls led by eight at the intermission.

1A Men’s Basketball Championship: Lincoln Charter powers past Kestrel Heights 97-75 to win their first title in school history

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Lincoln Charter Eagles claimed the school’s first championship as they blew past Kestrel Heights 97-75. The Eagles stretched a three-point advantage out to a 12-point halftime lead, outscoring the Hawks 24-15 in the second quarter and steadily grew the lead from there in the second half.

1A Women’s Basketball Championship: Mount Airy starts fast, claims first championship with 66-40 win over Pamlico

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Mount Airy started in the first quarter with a 27-6 lead after the first frame over Pamlico, and the Granite Bears never looked back on the way to a 66-40 victory and the school’s first Women’s Basketball State Championship.

The Lady Bears ripped off an 18-0 run to take the air out of Pamlico’s sails in the first quarter, forcing 13 turnovers in the opening quarter. Mount Airy defenders forced an incredible 28 turnovers for the game, winning the turnover battle by a margin of 10.
