ASHEBORO HIGH SCHOOL HONORS 10TH HALL OF FAME CLASS
ASHEBORO—Asheboro High School recently inducted its 10th class into the Asheboro High School Hall of Fame, including three individuals and one team.
Dee Bulla, Chuckie Simmons, Mark Sink and the 1986 Asheboro baseball team were recognized for induction.
Bulla is a 1975 graduate of Asheboro who currently serves as athletic director at the school. He had a stint as head football coach and athletic director at Randleman from 1984 to ’99 and has been at Asheboro since 2003. He was outstanding football player at track athlete as a student at Asheboro.
Simmons, a 1987 Asheboro graduate, is one of the school’s all-time greats in track. He was the NCHSAA state 3-A 100 meter champion in ’86 and then led the four by 200 meter relay team to the state crown in ’87. He continued his track career in college at St. Augustine’s and then transferred to North Carolina State, where he was the 1990 ACC long jump champ in both indoor and outdoor track. He’s currently the head football coach at South Asheboro Middle.
Mark Sink was an exceptional football and baseball player in the mid-1960’s at Asheboro, graduating in 1966. He later played baseball at Gardner-Webb and then finished at Pembroke State University (now UNC-Pembroke). He had an opportunity to sign with the California Angels organization but completed his education, going to seminary and now serving as pastor at Lankford Memorial Baptist Church in Greensboro.
The 1986 Comet baseball team wound up winning the NCHSAA state championship, sweeping South Iredell in the final series. Asheboro had a 4-3 record early but won its last 21 games to finish 25-3 overall. Tony Coble of Asheboro was named the Most Valuable Player of the state championship series. The team was coached by Martin Smith, with Tony McKee and Gary Martin serving as assistants.
