NCHSAA announces 2020 Tony Cullen Memorial Scholarship Recipients

Chapel Hill — The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) is pleased to announce the 2020 recipients of the Tony Cullen Memorial Scholarship an award honoring the late Tony Cullen, a former lacrosse player, coach, and official.  The scholarship is given to one male and one female senior varsity lacrosse player who plans to play varsity lacrosse on the collegiate level.  Alyssa Fizer from John T. Hoggard High School and Brian Fitz from Leesville Road High School are this year’s recipients of the $1,000 scholarship award.

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

Alyssa Fizer is a two- sport athlete at John T. Hoggard High School where she played varsity golf and lacrosse. Her junior and senior year she made first team all conference and second team all area for golf and first team all area and all conference for lacrosse. She was also a regional qualifier for golf. Aside from her athleticism Alyssa is also an exceptional student. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Beta Club. She also volunteers at Hope Tree Elementary School, Sunset Park Elementary School, and Roland Grise Middle School. Her professional aspirations are to become an attorney.

Brian Fitz is a student at Leesville Road High School where he played lacrosse all four years. During his time as a lacrosse player he earned first team all conference, first team all region, and second team all state recognitions. Brian also finds time to volunteer as a Carolina Hilltoppers’ Assistant Coach and a Young Life Leader. He is a member of his school’s computer science club. Brian plans to pursue a degree in Business Administration.

ABOUT THE TONY CULLEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Tony Cullen Memorial Scholarship is given in memory of former player, coach, and official, Tony Cullen. Tony Cullen, a former Chapel Hill resident, played and coached lacrosse at Duke University in the 80’s and became an official in the early 90’s.  The scholarship is given to one male and one female senior varsity lacrosse player who plans to play varsity lacrosse on the collegiate level and places an emphasis on giving back to the game of lacrosse.
