Hall of Famer, Coach Doug Henderson Passes Away

Greensboro, NC – William Douglas Henderson, Sr. passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 4th at Cone Hospital. Doug was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and past chairman of the Board of Deacons. He also served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years.

He retired from the coaching profession after 31 successful years. He spent 14 years as executive secretary of the North Carolna Football Coaches Association, an organization he helped found in 1988. He served as president of that organization in 1987-1988 and later as a member of the Board of Directors. He coached in the North-South All Star Game, the East-West All Star Game, and the Shrine Bowl All Star Game.

He was honored by being inducted into the Guilford County Hall of Fame, the State High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, and most recently the first class of the Western Guilford High School Hall of Fame. He was very proud and honored that over 50 of his former players have entered the coaching and teaching profession.

Doug held both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of North Carolina. He loved the Tar Heels. Over the years he and Doris traveled across the United States to see the Heels play football.

Doug was predeceased by his parents, Wall and Virginia Henderson. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doris Henderson and their three sons, Doug, Jr. (Millie), Chuck (Terri), and Rob (Beth) and their six grandchildren, Olivia, Sarah, Lauren, Tyler, Catelyn, and Brooke.

There will be a memorial service at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at one PM and a visitation afterward in the church Fellowship Hall.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, Urban Ministry, or Hospice of Greensboro.
