STUDENTS FROM SOUTHEAST GUILFORD & WEST MECKLENBURG EARN PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARDS

CHAPEL HILL— Eric Hudson, Jr. from West Mecklenburg High School and Carson Smith from Southeast Guilford High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards.

Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Smith, a junior on the Falcons wrestling team, won the 3A 120-pound weight class at the 2018 NCHSAA Individual Wrestling State Championships. Smith knocked off the two-time state champion, Josh Blatt, from North Henderson, winning by a 7-0 margin. Smith was an undefeated 4A State Champion at 113-pounds in 2017 and finished his junior campaign with a record of 40-3 as he was named the 3A Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Individual tournament.

Hudson, a junior at West Meck on the wrestling team, took home the 195-pound weight class state championship in the 4A ranks. Hudson was voted the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler, as he won the first state title at West Mecklenburg in 25 years. Hudson earned is 102nd career win in the tournament.

Weekly recipients will be recognized on the NCHSAA Website and social media pages. They will also be honored at a banquet for all recipients from this year in late April. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
