Chapel Hill Hires New Coaches

CHAPEL HILL—Chapel Hill High School has named new coaches for both cross country and track, according to a release from the school.

Joan Nesbit Mabe has been selected as the new head men’s and women’s cross country coach, while Kevin Swain will become the new head men’s and women’s track and field coach.

The new coaches will take over their respective programs after the retirement of veteran coach Ron Olsen, who had a stellar career of 40 years as a teacher and coach.  Chapel Hill has won a total of 20 NCHSAA state championships combined in the sports of cross country and track.

Joan Nesbit Mabe is a former Olympian, competing for the United States in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, and was an All-American during her running days at the University of North Carolina. She served as an assistant coach at Chapel Hill High back in the 1980’s and was the distance coach at North Carolina for five years, earning an ACC Cross Country Coach of the Year honor.

Swain has been an assistant coach in the Chapel Hill programs in both cross country and track for the last four years under Olsen.   He has previously coached at East Chapel Hill and Cedar Ridge and also has collegiate level coaching at Florida State.

Swain will be an assistant coach to Mabe in the cross country program, while Mabe will be an assistant track coach to Swain in the spring.
