VETERAN COACH REX MITCHELL
RETIRES AT SURRY CENTRAL
DOBSON— Veteran teacher and coach Rex Mitchell of Surry Central is retiring after 37 years in education.
According to the Mount Airy News, the outstanding track and field coach has been involved in that sport for 35 of his 37 years in teaching. He has also coached indoor track and cross country and has had excellent teams in all of those sports.
Mitchell had 21 athletes to win a total of 40 individual state championships. He also coached teams to 10 state championships in cross country and track, including five consecutive men’s cross country state titles from 2000 through 2004, spanning two different classifications.
