ROSE’S DECKER LEADS INDIVIDUAL STANDINGS;
LEESVILLE ROAD PACES TEAMS IN NCHSAA 4-A GOLF
PINEHURST— Andrew Decker of Greenville Rose has a one-shot advantage over the field after Monday’s opening round of play in the 75th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s golf championships at Pinehurst number six.
Decker had a three-under par 68 on Monday and holds a one-stroke lead over three golfers, including Ben Griffin of East Chapel Hill, Carter Jenkins of Raleigh Leesville Road and Phillip Oweida of Charlotte Myers Park.
Defending individual champion Grayson Murray of Leesville Road had a 71 and is in a group of four golfers three shots off the pace.
The championship is being contested on a par-71 layout set at 6,537 yards or the NCHSAA event.
Leesville Road recorded a team score of 285 to take a five-shot lead in that department over Myers Park. Raleigh Wakefield is third at 294 and Cary Green Hope fourth at 298. Green Hope has won the 4-A team title four times in the last five years.
The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.
Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.
A total of 84 golfers began play in the two-day tournament. Action is scheduled to resume at 8:00 on Tuesday morning.
