WINSTON-SALEM/FORSYTH HALL OF FAME RECIPIENTS NAMED
WINSTON-SALEM — The new class of inductees to the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County High School Sports Hall of Fame has been announced by the Winston-Salem Sportsmen Club, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.
The class includes former Carver football coach Keith Wilkes, Walter Black (East Forsyth), the late James Cunningham (R.J. Reynolds) and Mark Redd (South Park). The induction ceremony and banquet will be May 13 at the Benton Convention Center.
Wilkes coached Carver to a 139-62-1 record and two NCHSAA 3-A championships from 1992 to 2007. He resigned to take a coaching job in Georgia but left there after three seasons. Wilkes graduated from North Forsyth High in 1981 and from Winston-Salem State, where he was an All-America offensive lineman, in 1985.
Black starred in track and football at East, and was a teammate of Wilkes when Carver was a 9-10 high school. Black won a Morehead Scholarship and signed with North Carolina and was a three-year letterman at defensive back.
Cunningham was one of the top athletes in Forsyth County in the mid-1970s, playing basketball and football. He was the MVP of the NCHSAA 4-A basketball championship game in 1974 after helping Reynolds to the state crown. He signed a football scholarship with Clemson but stayed just one year.
Redd was a 6-0 guard for old South Park High and scored 978 points in three seasons, finishing his career in 1981.
