FORMER NCHSAA MEMBER SCHOOL TO RECOGNIZE ATHLETES
SNOW CAMP — It may not be too unusual for a North Carolina High School Athletic Association member school to recognize outstanding teams or athletes, but it is somewhat unusual for a school which is no longer a member to do that sort of thing.
Tonight at Sylvan Elementary School in Alamance County, a former high school’s great athletic tradition will be recognized between recreation department basketball games.
Sylvan Elementary is honoring its 1912-1960 Sylvan High School women’s basketball championship teams. Those teams at the old Sylvan High School won 14 championships between 1944-1960, in the era before the NCHSAA even offered a women’s state championship.
Several former players will be in attendance and will be honored.
Sylvan actually won one of the first NCHSAA state championships ever offered, as its baseball team own the 1914 NCHSAA state baseball title.
