STANDINGS TIGHTLY BUNCHED IN NCHSAA 4-A WOMEN’S GOLF
PINEHURST – Nine players are bunched within three shots of the lead after Monday’s opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Pinehurst number six.
Wakefield’s Stephanie Pribonic and Sara Bae of Raleigh Athens Drive each shot 74 on a chilly day to take a one-shot advantage over three golfers. Tied at 75, one stroke back, are Victoria Allred of Pfafftown Reagan, Allyson Markiewicz of Charlotte Ardrey Kell and Emiley Pagrabs of Wilmington Hoggard.
The course is set at par 71 and a 5,735-yard layout for the championship.
Charlotte Ardrey Kell has a narrow one-shot lead over Raleigh Athens Drive in the team standings, with four schools within six shots of the lead. Pfafftown Ronald Reagan is third at 245 and New Bern fourth at 246.
The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 14 teams and 78 golfers are competing in the event, the ninth year that the sport has been classified. It is the first time that three separate championships have been held and the 31st year for state championship competition in the sport.
The final day of play is scheduled to get underway at 8:30 on Tuesday morning.
