TWO ASHEVILLE PLAYERS IN SINGLES SEMIFINALS
BURLINGTON– Two Asheville singles players advanced to the semifinals with two wins on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A women’s tennis tournament championship at the Burlington Tennis Center.
MacKenzie LaSure of Asheville, the 2009 singles runner-up and the defending champion, moved into the Saturday morning semifinals against Jasmine Gabriel of Weddington, while teammate Alex Theodossiou takes on Grace Deering of Charlotte Catholic.
In doubles, the Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons duo of Lauren Brooker and Caroline Smith won both of their matches in straight sets and dropped only two games. They were the state runners-up in 2010.
Three sets of sisters, all in one half of the bracket, won their opening matches in doubles and one pair, Randi and Kaley Price of Nash Central, won twice. The Prices will play the Gibbons team in their semifinal.
Semifinals will start Saturday morning at 9 am at the Burlington Tennis Center, with the winners advancing to the state championship matches later in the day. In case of inclement weather, the tournament will move indoors to the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center with the semifinals starting at noon.
