KYLE JOHNSON WINS SECOND STRAIGHT SINGLES TITLE IN NCHSAA STATE 3-A MEN’S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

BURLINGTON–Sophomore Kyle Johnson of Charlotte Catholic won his second consecutive singles championship on Saturday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s tennis tournament championships at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Johnson, who dropped only three games in his two Friday victories, defeated freshman Chaz Fitzpatrick of Eastern Wayne in a morning semifinal and then beat Weddington’s Dallas Croom in straight sets in the championship match, 7-6(1), 6-1.

The duo of Andrew Treske and Joey Hatala of Waxhaw Marvin Ridge won a tightly contested match in the doubles final, as they got past Chris Geaslen and Matt Daly of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons 7-6(6), 6-3.

Doubles teams from Cardinal Gibbons had won the last four state championships at 2-A, but Gibbons has moved up to 3-A for this realignment period. Geaslen had teamed with Jonathan Fedorkowicz to win the 2-A title a year ago.

Treske and Hatala had to battle through a three-set match in their morning semifinal before eliminating Western Alamance’s Greg Patterson and Rajiv Dinakaran. The Gibbons team ousted Seth Edwards and Cory Carter of Morganton Patton in straight 6-4 sets in the other semifinal.
