State Men’s Golf Championships Complete

HIGHLAND TECH’S BUNNER TAKES MEDALIST, WEST MONTGOMERY IS TEAM WINNER IN NCHSAA 1-A MEN’S GOLF

SOUTHERN PINES– Defending individual champion Greg Bunner of Gastonia Highland Tech fired a two-under par 69 on Tuesday to take the individual championship in the 13th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A men’s golf championships at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club.

Bunner had a 36-hole score of 142, three shots better than Stanhope Johnson of Kernersville Bishop McGuinness. Ethan Sasser of West Montgomery won a playoff with Mitchell’s Thomas Buchanan for third.

The championship was held on a par-71, 6,543-yard layout for the NCHSAA event.

West Montgomery entered the final day of play just one shot off the team lead, behind Bishop McGuinness, and recorded an even 300 to win the championship by nine shots with a 612 total. Highland Tech placed third at 628.

The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.

A total of 84 golfers competed in the two-day tournament.

SALISBURY’S DIXON TAKES INDIVIDUAL CROWN,NORTH LINCOLN RALLIES FOR TEAM TITLE IN NCHSAA 2-A GOLF

BUIES CREEK –Salisbury’s Roy Dixon grabbed the individual lead in the opening round and held on Tuesday to take top individual honors in the 25th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men’s golf championships at the Keith Hills Country Club.

Dixon, who was 13th in the individual standings in last year’s 2-A state tournament, had a 74 on the final day to go with his 71 on Monday for a 145 total on the par-72, 6,500-yard layout, good for a two-shot advantage over runner-up Thomas Lilly of Maiden.

Miller Capps of North Lincoln, who was third in the individual standings, led his team to its second consecutive state crown as North came from eight shots off the pace on the final day. North Lincoln recorded a 614 to 616 for first-day leader Salisbury, while Hampstead Topsail was third, five shots back.

The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

HICKORY’S POSTEN TAKES INDIVIDUAL CROWN, NORTHERN GUILFORD EARNS TEAM TITLE IN NCHSAA 3-A GOLF

FOXFIRE VILLAGE –Hickory’s J.T. Posten carded a 74 on Tuesday to go with an opening round four-under par 68 to capture the individual championship in the 25th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s golf championships at the Foxfire Golf and Country Club.

Posten, who was seventh in last year’s 3-A tournament, had a 142 total to hold off a surging Zack Lewis of Southern Lee, who fired a 68 on Tuesday to finish four shots back. Southern Lee’s Jack Radley and Philip Linder of Foard were tied for third at 148.

The championship was held on a par-72, 6600-yard layout for the NCHSAA event.

Northern Guilford won a playoff on the scorecard using the score of the fifth golfer after Northern and Gastonia Forestview finished knotted at 608, after Forestview put together a great 295 team score on Tuesday. Hickory, the defending team champion, placed third with a 614, six shots back, while Fred T. Foard was fourth.

LEESVILLE ROAD GOLFER IS MEDALIST, GREEN HOPE TOPS TEAM STANDINGS IN NCHSAA 4-A GOLF

PINEHURST–Grayson Murray of Raleigh Leesville Road fired a four-under par 68 in Tuesday’s final round of play to earn the individual championship at the 74th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s golf championships at Pinehurst number eight.

The championship was held on a par-72 layout set at 6,668 yards or the NCHSAA event.

Murray, who had the best round of the day and entered the final 18 tied for the lead, had a six-under total of 138, three shots ahead of defending individual champ Michael Cromie of Cary Green Hope. Cromie was tied for the lead after the opening round but had a 71 on Tuesday for a 141 total. The other golfer with a share of the first-day lead, Logan Harrell of Huntersville Hopewell, had a 72 in the final round to finish third.

Green Hope successfully defended its state title and earned its fourth state crown in the last six years, maintaining the eight-shot lead over Raleigh Leesville Road after the first day. Green Hope had a 591 and Leesville Road a 599 after both teams went under 300 for the final round. Southern Pines Pinecrest was third at 613.
