First Day Of Men’s Tennis Tournaments Completed

1A Men’s Tennis

SATURDAY PAIRINGS SET IN SINGLES AND DOUBLES FOR NCHSAA 1-A MEN’S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

CARY—Two conference rivals very familiar with one another will meet for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A men’s tennis doubles championship on Saturday at the Cary Tennis Center.

A pair of Northwest 1-A Conference teams, Ethan Lyon and Houston Calloway of East Wilkes along with Nick John and Brooks Mayberry of Mount Airy, will meet on Saturday morning for the fifth time this season. Both duos won a pair of state tournament matches on Friday to advance to the state final.

The Mount Airy team has a 3-1 edge in previous matches this season, which included a pair of regular season matches, the Northwest Conference tournament and the West Regional last weekend.

Neither regional champion qualified for the state singles title, which will feature South Davidson’s Jan Ackermann against Albemarle’s Akash Dadlani. All of Friday’s singles matches, including wins by Dadlani and Ackermann after their first round opponents had defaulted, went the full three sets.

The singles final is set for the Cary Tennis Center at nine o’clock Saturday morning with the doubles championship to follow.

2-A MEN’S TENNIS

CARDINAL GIBBONS PLACES TWO IN SINGLES, DOUBLES SEMIFINALS IN NCHSAA 2-A MEN’S TENNIS

CARY— Two of the four regional champions won both of their matches on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men’s tennis tournament championship at the Cary Tennis Center.

East Regional champ Taylor Sullivan of Kill Devil Hills First Flight and Mideast champ Matt Daly of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons each advanced to a Saturday morning semifinal, where they will face one another. Ethan Caudell of St. Pauls will take on another Cardinal Gibbons player, Greg Galush in the other singles semi Saturday morning at nine o’clock.

Caudell beat Huntley Nero of Lenoir Hibriten in straight sets in the quarterfinals after Nero had survived a three-hour, 45-minute three-set marathon, ousting West Regional titlist Ryan Poage of Shelby 7-6 (7), 4-6, 6-3.

Two Gibbons doubles teams also moved into semifinal action. Jonathan Fedorkowicz and Chris Geaslen will take on Newton-Conover’s Won Lak Choi and Hang Lak Choi, while teammates Chris Betz and Tom Ayers face Seth Edwards and Cory Carter of Morganton Patton. Fedorkowicz has been a part of the state champion doubles team the past two years, pairing with Ryan Daly.

The Patton team beat Jerry Newburg and Nick Gardner of Hillsborough Cedar Ridge in straight sets in the quarterfinals, after the Cedar Ridge pair had won their opening match in a record fashion—all three sets going to tiebreakers.

The championship matches will follow the semifinals on Saturday.

LAKE NORMAN PLAYERS ADVANCE TO NCHSAA STATE 3-A SINGLES SEMIFINALS

BURLINGTON—A pair of Lake Norman High School singles players won both their matches on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A tennis tournament championships at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Trey McKee and Andrew McKinnon won both of their matches in straight sets to move into Saturday semifinals. McKee will face Nick James of Wilson Fike while McKinnon battles Charlotte Catholic’s Kyle Johnson.

Two Catholic doubles teams advanced and the teammates will face one another in the semifinals when Nick Bursch and Matt Sandberg play Sean Huber and Jordan Klochany. The other morning semi puts Statesville’s Tripp Hawkins and Parks Thompson against Andrew Treske and Andrew Baird of Waxhaw Marvin Ridge.

Play will start at nine o’clock Saturday morning with the championships to follow.

4-A MEN’S TENNIS

QUALIFIERS FROM EIGHT DIFFERENT SCHOOLS MOVE INTO STATE 4-A MEN’S TENNIS SEMIFINALS

CHAPEL HILL – Qualifiers from eight different schools advanced to semifinal action after Friday’s opening day of play in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s tennis tournament championships at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center at the University of North Carolina.

Jake Bowling of Cary Green Hope will face Winston-Salem Mount Tabor’s Tomas Debinski in one Saturday morning singles semifinal while Robbie Mudge of Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds takes on Roman Cacha of Raleigh Athens Drive. Cacha dropped only five games in the four sets he played on Friday.

In doubles, three of the four teams advancing to the semifinals qualified out of the Mideast Regional, with the only exception the East champion pair of Ryan Noble and Andrew Bock of Fayetteville Terry Sanford. The Terry Sanford team will play Sean Weber and Quinn Carmean of Raleigh Millbrook in one semifinal while Northern Durham’s Pierce Hoover and Adam Flur will battle East Chapel Hill’s Michael Goldstein and Peter McDonald.

Noble won the singles title a year ago while Bock played with Ryan Anderson on a doubles team that finished as state runner-up.

Action is set to begin at 9:30 on Saturday morning.
