South Lenoir’s Novicki Leads 2-A Individual Golf

SOUTH LENOIR’S NOVICKI LEADS INDIVIDUAL RACE;

MCMICHAEL, NORTH LINCOLN KNOTTED IN NCHSAA 2-A GOLF

SOUTHERN PINES – Scott Novicki of South Lenoir has a two-shot advantage over the field after the first day of the 24th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men’s golf championships at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club on Monday.

Novicki fired a two-under par 69 on Longleaf’s par-71, 6,543-yard layout on a chilly, wet day to forge a lead over North Lincoln’s Zach Lawing, who had an even-par 71. West Davidson’s Justin Clement is at one-over 72 in third, followed by Miller Capps of North Lincoln and Rich Leeper of Carrboro at 74, five shots back.

Mayodan Dalton McMichael and North Lincoln are deadlocked in the team standings with 305 totals, three shots ahead of South Lenoir. Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons, the defending team champion, is tied for fourth with Shelby at 315.

The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.

A total of 84 golfers began play in the two-day tournament, but the start was delayed an hour due to lightning. Action will resume at eight o’clock on Tuesday morning.

Wendy’s is the presenting sponsor of the NCHSAA sports program.
