State Wachovia Cup Winners Announced

WACHOVIA CUP WINNERS ANNOUNCED FOR 2007-08 YEAR

CHAPEL HILL — Wachovia Bank, N.A., and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association today announced the final standings for the 2007-08 academic year in the Wachovia Cup competitions after the spring sports seasons.

The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia Bank, N.A., and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. The Wachovia Cup program has concluded its 29th year.

Charlotte Myers Park moved back past winter leader Chapel Hill to take over first place in the final 4-A standings. Charlotte Catholic took the top spot among 3-A schools while Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons won the 2-A classification. With a strong spring, Hendersonville surged by Kernersville Bishop McGuinness to win among the 1-A schools.

In the 4-A classification, Myers Park’s fourth-place finish in women’s outdoor track made the difference as Myers Park finished with 387.5 points to 372.5 for Chapel Hill. Charlotte Providence was just back in third place at 370 points, with top spring finishes including second in men’s golf, in the top eight in women’s soccer and tied for third in baseball. Morrisville Green Hope was fourth in the overall standings and North Mecklenburg was fifth.

Charlotte Catholic remained first in the 3-A classification on the strength of a men’s dual team tennis state championship and a finish in the top eight in women’s soccer for a total of 470 points. Three-time defending Wachovia champ Asheville T.C. Roberson had 402.5 points and tied for second with Asheville High School. Roberson had state runner-up finishes in both women’s soccer and women’s outdoor track while Asheville placed third in men’s outdoor track and sixth in women’s outdoor track.

Cardinal Gibbons held on to the top spot among 2-A schools with playoff points in four different spring sports, including sweeping both the top spots in men’s golf and men’s dual team tennis. Gibbons had a total of 632.5 points, well ahead of second place Shelby at 355, which took top honors in men’s outdoor track, finished tied for third in women’s soccer and was fourth among 2-A teams in men’s golf. Women’s soccer champion Kill Devil Hills First Flight was third with 347.5 points and baseball champ Orange placed fourth with a total of 317.5.

In the 1-A classification, Hendersonville tallied playoff points in four spring sports, including a state championship in men’s outdoor track, a runner-up finish in men’s tennis and fourth-place in women’s outdoor track, to score 525 points and pass Bishop McGuinness. McGuinness was second with 467.5, finishing second in women’s track, tied for third in women’s soccer and in the top eight in baseball.

Hampstead Topsail, boosted by a pair of second-place finishes in men’s golf and baseball, was third with a total of 415. The North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham, state champions in men’s dual team tennis, was fourth at 362.5.

Wachovia Cup points are determined by a system based on performance in state-championship events. All schools that finish in the top eight positions (plus ties) earn points. In the playoff events involving teams from more than one classification, Wachovia Cup points are awarded based on the school’s standing against other schools in its own classification. If fewer then eight schools from a classification compete in a sport, only those schools that are represented are eligible to receive the Wachovia Cup points.

Points are awarded for all sports as follows: 50 for first, 45 for second, 40 for third, 35 for fourth, 30 for fifth, 25 for sixth, 20 for seventh and 15 for eighth. In the event of a tie, the schools receive an equal number of points based on the number of teams that tie and the number of teams that finish higher in the standings. Five points are awarded for each sanctioned sport in which a school competes.

Wachovia Cup standings are announced three times each school year: once after the fall and then the winter sports, and concluding with the winner after the spring sports season ends in June. The engraved silver cups are presented during NCHSAA Day activities at UNC-Chapel Hill each fall.
