Pinecrest Rallies To Win NCHSAA 4-A Golf

FIELDS OF PINECREST SHOOTS 67 TO LEAD TEAM TO NCHSAA 4-A GOLF TITLE

PINEHURST— Jack Fields of Southern Pines Pinecrest fired a blistering four-under 67 on Tuesday to win top individual honors in the 72nd annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s golf championships at Pinehurst number six.

The championship was held on a par-71 layout set at 6,500 yards for the NCHSAA event.

Fields finished with a 138 total, four under par and four shots ahead of Charlotte Providence’s Nik Peterson. Jonathan Miles of Wilmington Hoggard was in third place, six shots off the pace.

First day leader Michael Marshburn of Morrisville Green Hope, who had a 70 on Monday, finished in fifth with a 147 total after a 77 in the final round.

Fields’ heroics on Tuesday helped lift Pinecrest to the team championship, rallying from third place after the first day and spoiling Morrisville Green Hope’s bid for a third consecutive state team championship.

Pinecrest finished with a 586, six shots ahead of Providence and 10 strokes better than third place Green Hope. Huntersville Hopewell was fourth but was 34 shots back.

The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.

A total of 84 golfers competed in the two-day tournament. Wendy’s and the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
