2007 Winter Season Wachovia Cup Leaders Announced

Wachovia Bank, N.A., along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the standings after the winter sports seasons in the Wachovia Cup competitions for the 2006-07 academic year.

The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia Bank, N.A., and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. The Wachovia Cup program is in its 28th year.

Defending champion Charlotte Providence moved into first place in the 4-A standings while Asheville T.C. Roberson really opened up some ground over the field in the 3-A classification. Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons continues to pace the 2-A classification while Kernersville Bishop McGuinness has taken over the top spot among the 1-A schools.

In the 4-A classification, Providence used a state championship in women’s swimming and a couple of strong finishes in men’s and women’s indoor track to move into first place with 340 points, opening up a solid lead over second-place Chapel Hill at 257.5. A third-place finish in men’s swimming and fourth in women’s swimming aided Chapel Hill. Fall leader Raleigh Broughton slipped to third with 236.67 points and Raleigh Enloe is in fourth place at 205, buoyed by a state championship finish in men’s swimming and second place in women’s swimming.

T.C. Roberson had just a 2.5-point lead over Charlotte Catholic in the 3-A classification after the fall sports season, but now the margin is almost 100 points. Remarkably, Roberson racked up championship points in six different winter sports, finishing anywhere from second place to a tie for fifth in all winter state playoffs except wrestling to total 420 points. Catholic swept both 3-A swimming titles and recorded 322.5 points, good for the runner-up slot, while Asheville is in third with 255. Asheville’s best winter finish was a second place among 3-A men’s teams in indoor track. Pfafftown Ronald Reagan scored points in both men’s and women’s swimming and moved from ninth in the fall to fourth with a total of 225 points.

Cardinal Gibbons strengthened its hold on the top spot among 2-A schools with points in five different winter sports, running up a total of 492.5 points ahead of runner-up West Henderson at 307.5. West added points for ties for fifth in both men’s basketball and wrestling. Shelby moved into third place with 257.5 points and Salisbury is now fourth at 240, Shelby’s advancement added by a tie for third in men’s basketball and points in both men’s and women’s swimming.

In the 1-A classification, Bishop McGuinness successfully defended its women’s basketball title and increased its margin over the field, tallying 347.5 points. Polk County, aided by a top finish among 1-A men’s teams in indoor track, is in second with 265 points, RIght behind is Hendersonville, which jumped from a tie for fifth after the fall into third with 260 points. The Bearcats were second among the 1-A entries in women’s indoor track. Defending 1-A champ Topsail is in fourth at 260.

Wachovia Cup points are determined by a system based on performance in state-championship events. All schools that finish in the top eight positions (plus ties) earn points. In the playoff events involving teams from more than one classification, Wachovia Cup points are awarded based on the school’s standing against other schools in its own classification. If fewer then eight schools from a classification compete in a sport, only those schools that are represented are eligible to receive the Wachovia Cup points.

Points are awarded for all sports as follows: 50 for first, 45 for second, 40 for third, 35 for fourth, 30 for fifth, 25 for sixth, 20 for seventh and 15 for eighth. In the event of a tie, the schools receive an equal number of points based on the number of teams that tie and the number of teams that finish higher in the standings. Five points are awarded for each sanctioned sport in which a school competes.

Wachovia Cup standings are announced three times each school year: once after the fall and then the winter sports, and concluding with the winner after the spring sports season ends in June. The engraved silver cups are presented during NCHSAA Day activities at UNC-Chapel Hill each fall.
