Ashbook’s Burnham Leads Individuals, Northwest Guilford Paces Teams In 4-A Women’s Golf

BUIES CREEK – Gastonia Ashbrook’s Megan Burnham recorded a three-over par 76 on Monday to take the individual lead after the opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Keith Hills Country Club.

Burnham has a one-stroke lead over Katherine Perry of Raleigh Athens Drive, while a group of five golfers is knotted at 78, five shots out of first.

Par is set at 73 on the 5,638-yard layout.

Northwest Guilford holds the team lead with a 243, four shots ahead of Gastonia Ashbrook. North Mecklenburg is third, 13 shots off the pace. Defending team champion Charlotte Myers Park is in a tie for fifth with Chapel Hill and Wake Forest-Rolesville at 260, one shot behind fourth-place Wilmington Ashley.

The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 78 golfers and 12 teams are competing in the two-day, 36-hole event.

Play is now scheduled to get underway at 8:30 on Tuesday morning, a delay of 30 minutes over the previously announced tee times due to a frost warning.

Wendy’s and the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
