REGION 1: Caroline Lowcher, Manteo High School
SPORT(S): SOCCER, VOLLEYBALL
SERVICE PROJECT: Organized a beach cleanup along North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Caroline solicited volunteers by hanging fliers in the offices of coastal organizations and nearby high schools and presenting her plan to clubs and organizations in local schools. This project benefited the environment and improved the economic status of that area. It was an opportunity for people, especially high school students, to join together in giving back to their community. Caroline is currently a student at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
REGION 2: Patrick Hernandez, Croatan High School
SPORT: SOCCER
SERVICE PROJECT: As President of the Swansboro Area Youth Development Foundation (SAYDF), Patrick led a committee of both students and adults in the planning of a Halloween Extravaganza and Dance. The event featured various games, competitions, and an adult only costume dance. All proceeds were given to selected charities in the Swansboro Area. Patrick is currently a student at Indiana University.
REGION 3: Nassar Omar, Carrboro High School
SPORT(S): BASKETBALL, FOOTBALL
SERVICE PROJECT: Developed and facilitated a Black History Month Educational Seminar and Discussion. Middle school students studied facts about important past and present African-American figures, as well as discussed relevant issues. Nassar was responsible for writing the weekly lesson plans and coaching the students for a local debate. He is currently a student at Morehouse College.
REGION 4: Jazmine Kemp, East Bladen High School
SPORT(S): BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL
SERVICE PROJECT: Coordinated and facilitated the wreckED program at area middle schools with the help of the East Bladen D.R.E.A.M. Team. The wreckED program is a teen-oriented substance abuse prevention and education program that teaches teens about the realities and consequences of substance use. The Partnership for a Drug-Free America developed it with the hopes that teens will be proactive when dealing with drug-related issues. Jazmine is currently a student-athlete at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
REGION 5: Bobby Gordon, III, Southern Alamance High School
SPORT(S): BASEBALL, FOOTBALL
SERVICE PROJECT: Organized and led a youth football camp in Alamance County. The “Patriot Football Camp” was a day of teaching young aspiring football players fundamentals of the game and skills to be successful athletes. With a camp motto of “Dream Big,” they learned the importance of teamwork, leadership, and perseverance. With the help of other football players and coaches from Southern Alamance High School and the Alamance-Burlington School System, the campers had a fun and educational experience.
REGION 6: Norkeithus Otis, Ashbrook High School
SPORT(S): FOOTBALL, TRACK & FIELD
SERVICE PROJECT: Co-Coordinator of the Ashbrook High School 2010 Kicking and Punting Clinic. The clinic targeted middle and high school athletes who aspire to play football. Norkeithus was be the long snapper instructor. All funds raised benefited the Ashbrook High School Booster Club, which supports all athletics at the school. Norkeithus is currently a student-athlete at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
REGION 7: Julia Roberts, Watauga High School
REGION 8: Mary Webb, McDowell High School
SPORT(S): BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL
SERVICE PROJECT: Created a Student Council at Pleasant Gardens Elementary which consisted of fifth and sixth graders. Interested students went through an application process that required them to identify their leadership skills and obtain teacher recommendations. The purpose was to establish student leadership within the school, while providing them with the necessary skills to be productive citizens of their community. Mary is currently a student at North Carolina State University.
