SERVICE PROJECT: "To address Nature-Deficit Disorder, the term describing the effects of the separation of children from nature, Julia completed a three step SAAC project. The first step was dealing directly with the children during a Nature Adventure Day for Pre-Kindergarteners. With the help of Curtis Smalling from the Audubon Society, she took them on a bird walk where they learned to use their senses to enjoy nature. Additionally, each child was given a paper bag backpack for natural suveniers (rocks, flowers, sticks, etc.) and a set of personalized binoculars made from toilet paper tubes. The second step was directed at the teachers. Julia gave a fifteen minute powerpoint presentation on Nature-Deficit and Nature-Deficit prevention during a five county Professional Development seminar. To give the project sustainability, Julia then created a "Nature-Deficit Disorder and the Educational Cure Bulletin." It was designed to give teachers in local counties a print resource they can reference for use in their classrooms."
