Endowment Games:
In 1993-94, a concept called ‘endowment games’ was implemented. These games are completely optional, one per sport, and may not extend the season. They do not count against the season limitation in that sport and are not used as part of the tie-breaking system. Endowment games must be revenue producing, with 25% of the gross revenue generated for the endowment fund; after expenses, the competing schools divide the remainder. An endowment game may be played prior to the regular first season contest or in an open date during the season. The game must fall within the weekly limitation criteria. Endowment games must be requested in advance and approved by the Development Office of the NCHSAA; request forms are available on-line at the NCHSAA’s official web site. Following participation in an Endowment Game, the host high school must submit a financial report along with the restricted funds to the NCHSAA office.
The endowment game concept has proven to be an effective means to both involve member schools and generate funds simultaneously. Each year, the number of schools participating in these games has increased. Schools participating in these games since 1993/94 have shared in over $5.5 million in revenue!
The NCHSAA Endowment Fund has been successfully established with moneys generated over the past sixteen years via various methods and with the appreciated support of the NCHSAA member schools and surrounding communities. The next several years will present the NCHSAA staff and Board of Directors with the task of finding new and unique methods of securing funds to insure the fund’s continued success for decades to come. As the NCHSAA faces increasing program-associated costs and membership needs change, the Endowment Fund will become even more vitally important to the success of the NCHSAA and the programs/services that it is able to provide for its member schools and the student-athletes in North Carolina.
