FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Following are some of the more frequently asked questions of the NCHSAA staff members.

 

 

1.         Q:         If a coach or player is disqualified from a contest and it is not for one of the 7 acts listed in                            the ejection policy, does he/she have to sit out the next two contests?

    

          A:     No, disqualifications do not require sitting out additional games.

 

 

2.         Q:         I haven’t received a copy of the ejection report from the official yet. Do I wait until I receive                   it before I file my copy with the NCHSAA?

 

          A:     No, send the report to the NCHSAA and contact the booking agent.

 

 

3.         Q:         Can I appeal an ejection by talking with the regional supervisor and NCHSAA?        

 

          A:     Only in cases of a misidentification of a player.

 

 

4.   Q:         If I have a player ejected for fighting, what happens?  What about the coach?

 

          A:     The player must sit out the next 4 contests (2 in football) at that level and any contests                in the interim and take the STAR Sportsmanship program prior to returning to play.  The                coach must take the NFHS Teaching and Modeling Behavior Course ($20 fee) prior to the                next contest.

 

5.         Q:         Can I have open gym during a dead period?        

 

          A:     No.

 

 

6.         Q:         Can open gym and a skill development session occur on the same day?

 

          A:     No.

 

 

7.         Q:         Can more than one skill development session be held on the same day in the same sport?

 

          A:     Only in the sport of basketball, which allows two 45 minute sessions with 4 different                     athletes in each session.

 

 

8.         Q:         Do the skill development/out of season workout rules apply just to head coaches?        

 

          A:     No, the rules also apply to all school personnel and volunteers.

 

 

9.         Q:          If I am a coach at an NCHSAA member school, and also a select soccer coach, AAU                                     basketball          coach, fall baseball league coach, freestyle wrestling coach, etc., are there                                     any restrictions          with me working with my high school team members outside the high school                            season?

 

          A:     Yes, the coaches must abide by the dead periods and the restricted # of athletes per                     sport for off-season development.

 

 

10.                 Q:         Are there any exceptions to the required 8 separate days of practice before a football player                   can dress to participate in his first scrimmage or game?        

 

          A:     Only athletes who play other sports and serve only as a kicker are exempt from the                     football conditioning requirements.

 

 

11.                 Q:         Can the 8th practice in football be on the same day as the first scrimmage?        

 

          A:     No, you must have 8 separate days of practice prior to conducting your 1st scrimmage.

 

 

12.                 Q:         Can JV teams schedule and play a separate Endowment game?        

 

          A:     No.

 

 

13.                 Q:         Can JV teams scrimmage?        

 

          A:     Yes, but can only be held in conjunction with a varsity scrimmage.

 

 

14.                 Q:         Is 7 on 7 allowed in football during out of season workouts, during the school year?  What                            about the summer?

 

          A:     Yes, intra-squad only during the school year.  Yes, outside competition is allowed during                the summer (no body-to-body contact; helmet and shoulder pads are allowed).     

 

 

15.                 Q:         What are the steps in applying for a hardship?

 

          A:     Request must be for an injury, illness, accident, and be beyond the control of the                          student, parent, school personnel.  Fill out the Hardship Request Form found under                     "School Central; Forms" on the NCHSAA website completely, and send to Rick Strunk in                the NCHSAA office.

 

 

16.                 Q:         If a varsity football game is postponed on Friday, but the JV game was played on Thursday,                            are all the JV players who played in the JV game, eligible to play in the rescheduled varsity                            game on Monday?  If yes, how?

 

          A:     Yes, by virtue of the 8-Quarter rule.

 

 

17.                 Q:         In the 1st two rounds of the playoffs, is it the responsibility of the host school, or the                                     NCHSAA, to secure officials?

 

          A:     The host school is responsible for the officials during the 1st two rounds of the playoffs.

 

 

18.                 Q:         Are home-school students eligible to play at an NCHSAA member school?        

 

          A:     No.

    

 

19.                 Q:         Are NCHSAA member schools required to use NCHSAA registered officials?        

 

          A:     Yes.

 

 

20.                 Q:         What needs to be done to get approval for an athlete to wear a prescribed appliance in an                            athletic contest?

 

          A:     Complete the prescribed appliance form and present to the officials at the game site.

    

 

21.                 Q:         Can a student participate at a second school in a different LEA in the same sport during the                            same sport season?  If yes, how?

 

          A:     Yes, only in cases of a bona-fide change in residence of the parent/legal custodian.  The                change of schools must be contemporaneous with the change in residence.

 

 

22.                 Q:         Can a student transfer and participate at a second school in the same LEA in the same sport                            during the same sport season?

 

          A:     Yes, only in cases of a bona-fide change in residence of the parent/legal custodian.  The                change of schools must be contemporaneous with the change in residence.

 

23.                 Q:         Are trainers required to be present at all football practices?  What about other sports?        

 

          A:     Yes, by law required for all football practices and games.  Not required for other sports,                but strongly recommended by the NCHSAA.    

 

 

24.                 Q:         In order to participate after a suspected head injury or confirmed concussion, what must                            happen?        

 

          A:     Student must be immediately removed from the practice/contest and the school/athletic                trainer/physician must follow the Gfeller-Waller Return to Play protocols.  The GF-W                     RTP form must be completed and signed off on by a licensed M.D. or D.O. prior to                     returning to competition or practice.

 

 

25.                 Q:          How can middle school students be involved with the high school program during the 185 day                            term?

 

          A:     They may not be involved in any way; however, the high school coach(es) may, with                     permission of the middle school and high school principal, work with the students at the                     middle school.

 

                 

26.                 Q:         The NCHSAA Felony Policy went into effect, May 7, 1998. If a student-athlete was charged                            with a felony Jan. 5 2012, was he/she eligible to play spring sports?

 

          A:     Yes, because it was only a felony CHARGE, not a CONVICTION.  LEA may be more                     restrictive.

 

 

27.                 Q:         If a student was convicted of a felony while in the 8th grade, is that student eligible to                                     participate in high school athletics at an NCHSAA member school?

 

          A:     Yes, if conviction occurred prior to the athlete being subject to the 8-Semester rule.

 

 

28.                 Q:         A student moves into our district from another school district, and meets all the NCHSAA                            eligibility requirements from the previous semester, and was promoted by the school he                            attended.   However, the student does not meet our local promotional standards.  Would that                   student be eligible?

 

          A:     Yes, eligible because of the previous school/LEA requirements regarding their local                          promotional standards.
