CHAPEL HILL—The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has announced the winter standings in the Wachovia Conference Cup competition for the 2007-2008 academic year.
The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by Wachovia and sanctioned by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performance within their respective athletic conferences. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
The Wachovia Conference Cup, formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy, is a companion to the Wachovia Cup, a statewide award give to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each of the four classifications.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification.
Class 1-A Conference Results
Albemarle 1-A: Manteo continues to lead the conference after a championship in women’s basketball. A second-place finish in women’s basketball and a third place finish in men’s basketball allowed Camden to stay in second place. Conference standings: Manteo 40.5, Camden 33, Perquimans 26, Plymouth 22.
Atlantic 1-A: Continuing to lead the conference, Williamston had a first-place finish in women’s basketball and a second-place spot in men’s basketball. Roanoke pulled away from Southside to second place overall. Conference standings: Williamston 25, Roanoke 31, Southside 28, Northside 26.
Carolina 1-A: League titles in women’s indoor track and basketball allowed North Johnston to maintain first place in the conference. Ayden-Grifton follows in second place and recorded a championship in men’s basketball. Conference standings: North Johnston 36.5, Ayden-Grifton 24, Princeton 23.5, Spring Creek 22, Rosewood 21.5 and North Duplin 16.5.
Coastal Plains 1-A: Topsail continues to lead the point race with a first-place finish in wrestling. Dixon follows in the second spot. Conference standings: Topsail 447.5, Dixon 410, East Carteret 320, Lejeune 317.5, Jones 275 and Pamlico 230.
Northwest 1-A: Bishop McGuinness had another outstanding season with league titles in women’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming. Mount Airy holds a small lead over East Surry for second place overall and finished the season with a championship in men’s basketball. Conference standings: Bishop McGuinness 85.5, Mount Airy 60.5, East Surry 60, West Wilkes 51, Alleghany 49, South Stokes 49, East Wilkes 46.5, Elkin 41.5 and North Stokes 40.
Smoky Mountain 1-A: Third-place finishes in men’s and women’s basketball helped Murphy hold on to its lead. Hayesville is second in the conference after taking first in men’s basketball. Conference standings: Murphy 95.5, Hayesville 90, Robbinsville 86.5, Swain 78.5, Cherokee 56.5, Andrews 50.5, Rosman 50.5, Hiwassee Dam 49, Highlands 38.5, Blue Ridge 32.5 and Nantahala 23.
Super Six 1-A: Union passed James Kenan for the top spot in the conference with a championship in women’s basketball and a third-place finish in men’s basketball. Second place now belongs to James Kenan, which had a second-place finish in women’s basketball. Conference standings: Union 205, James Kenan 202.5, Midway 180, Hobbton 167.5, Wallace Rose-Hill 165 and Lakewood 155.
Tar Roanoke 1-A: A top finish in wrestling allowed Louisburg to remain in first place. Gates follows in second place. Conference standings: Louisburg 560, Gates 400, North Edgecombe 300, Southwest Halifax 230, Weldon 190, Northampton-East 180 and Northampton-West 80.
Tideland Athletic 1-A: Jamesville barely held on to the lead with a second-place finish in women’s basketball. A conference championship in women’s basketball helped Cape Hatteras close the gap. Conference standings: Jamesville 24,Cape Hatteras 23, Creswell 17, Mattamuskeet 15, Bear Grass 14.5, Columbia 14.5 and Ocracoke 2.
Yadkin Valley 1-A: East Montgomery leads the point race and recorded a second-place finish in wrestling. Chatham Central took second place overall this season with a tie for first place in women’s basketball. Conference standings: East Montgomery 92, Chatham Central 81.5, Jordan-Matthews 81, South Davidson 81, West Montgomery 75.5, Thomasville 67.5, North Moore 65.5.
Class 1-A/2-A Conference Results
Mid-State 1-A/2-A: Championships in men’s and women’s swimming led Cardinal Gibbons to first place after the winter season. Orange climbed to second place with a title in wrestling. Conference standings: Cardinal Gibbons 88, Orange 66.5, Northwood 64, Cedar Ridge 60, Durham School of the Arts 55, N.C. Science and Math 54, Graham 50, Carrboro 40, Raleigh Charter 37 and Cummings 33.5.
Rocky River 1-A/2-A: Mount Pleasant remains in first place, finishing the season with championships in wrestling and women’s swimming. Second place still belongs to Albemarle, which recorded second-place finishes in wrestling and women’s swimming. Conference standings: Mount Pleasant 69, Albemarle 64.5, West Stanly 53.5, North Stanly 48.5, South Stanly 46.5, Gray Stone Day 45, Forest Hills 41.5, Monroe 40 and Central Academy 24.5.
Southeastern 1-A/2-A: A league title in men’s basketball helped West Bladen pass Fairmont for first place in the conference. Fairmont now holds second in the league. Conference standings: West Bladen 27, Fairmont 24, East Bladen 22, St. Pauls 21, South Robeson 19, West Columbus 18 and Red Springs 17.
Southern Piedmont 1-A/2-A: East Lincoln recorded conference crowns in men’s and women’s basketball which helped them remain in first place. Lincolnton is second overall and had a third-place finish in women’s basketball. Conference standings: East Lincoln 129, Lincolnton 115, West Lincoln 109, North Lincoln 104, South Iredell 102, Cherryville 91, Highland Tech 84 and Bessemer City 61.
Waccamaw 1-A/2-A: Pender was able to tie South Brunswick for first place in the conference with league titles in men’s and women’s basketball. South Brunswick finished the season with a championship in men’s wrestling, and North Brunswick now holds third place in the conference. Pender 83.5, South Brunswick 83.5, North Brunswick 53.5, Heide Trask 48, Whiteville 43.5, South Columbus 37 and East Columbus 23.
Western Highlands 1-A/2-A: After being in a deadlock for first place after the fall, Hendersonville has a slight lead over Charles D. Owen, which is now tied for second place with Polk County. Hendersonville recorded a top finish in men’s basketball. Conference standings: Hendersonville 100, Charles D. Owen 99.5, Polk County 99.5, Mountain Heritage 83, Avery County 81.5, Madison 69.5 and Mitchell 63.
Class 2-A Conference Results
Central Carolina 2-A: Salisbury held on to the top spot in the conference with a tie for first place in women’s basketball and a tie for second in men’s basketball. After finishing in third last season, Central Davidson is now in second place and recorded a championship in men’s basketball. Conference standings: Salisbury 89.5, Central Davidson 88, West Davidson 85, Ledford 84.5, East Davidson 76.5, North Rowan 57.5 and Lexington 54.
East Central 2-A: Croatan won the conference wrestling championship, which propelled it into first place overall. Swansboro is in second and East Duplin third in a tight race, and Clinton’s men basketball title moved it into fourth. Conference standings: Croatan 97, Swansboro 93, East Duplin 92.5, Clinton 82, Richlands 79, Southwest Onslow 76, Jacksonville Northside 73, South Lenoir 72.5.
Eastern Plains 2-A: North Pitt recorded a conference crown in men’s track to clinch the top spot. Farmville Central fell to second place overall and earned top finishes in men’s basketball and women’s track. Conference standings: North Pitt 35, Farmville Central 32.5, Greene Central 31.5, North Lenoir 27.5, Tarboro 27 and Goldsboro 23.5.
Mountain Valley 2-A: A conference title in men’s basketball and a second-place finish in wrestling helped Starmount pass Wilkes Central for first place in the league. Wilkes Central finished the winter in second place with a title in wrestling. Conference standings: Starmount 133.5, Wilkes Central 130, Forbush 123.5, North Surry 118, Surry Central 118, Ashe County 109.5 and North Wilkes 101.5.
North State 2-A: West Stokes passed McMichael to take the conference lead with a tie for first place in men’s basketball and second-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. McMichael is now second in the point race and took first place in men’s and women’s swimming and wrestling. Conference standings: West Stokes 106, McMichael 100.5, Eastern Guilford 94, Reidsville 83.5, Southern Guilford 59 and Atkins 40.
Northern Carolina 2-A: Southern Vance advanced to first place after taking top honors in men’s basketball, while Bunn fell to second place overall. Roanoke is in third place and had top finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. Conference standings: Southern Vance 116, Bunn 111, Roanoke Rapids 109.5, Franklinton 101.5, Warren County 60.5, Granville Central 49.5, Northwest Halifax 45.
Western Athletic 2-A: West Henderson extended its lead in the conference with a championship in swimming. Pisgah had a successful season with titles in men’s basketball and wrestling and is second overall. Conference standings: West Henderson 500, Pisgah 410, North Henderson 395, East Henderson 380, Smoky Mountain 370 and Brevard 365.
Class 2-A/3-A Conference Results
Catawba Valley 2-A/3-A: Hickory had an outstanding winter season and remained the conference leader with conference crowns in men’s and women’s basketball and women’s swimming. St. Stephens advanced to second, recording a first-place finish in wrestling. Conference standings: Hickory 153, St. Stephens 136.5, Fred T. Foard 128, Hibriten 118.5, Newton-Conover 116, Bandys 109.5, Bunker Hill 86.5, Maiden 86.5, Patton 85 and West Caldwell 81.5.
Northeastern Coastal 2-A/3-A: First Flight remains in the lead with Currituck and Edenton Holmes following in second and third place, respectively. Conference standings: First Flight 121, Currituck 110.5, Edenton Holmes 98.5, Northeastern 94, Pasquotank 87.5, Hertford County 63 and Bertie 50.5.
Southwestern 2-A/3-A: Sweeping conference titles in men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling, Shelby continues to lead the point race. King Mountain also had a successful season, advancing to second with top finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. Conference standings: Shelby 59, Kings Mountain 45, R-S Central 43.5, East Rutherford 31, Burns 27.5 and Chase 19.
Class 3-A Conference Results
Cape Fear Valley 3-A: First-place finishes in wrestling and women’s track and a second-place finish in women’s track helped Union Pines keep its lead in the conference. Harnett Central follows in second place with top finishes in women’s basketball and swimming. Conference standings: Union Pines 157.5, Harnett Central 149, Triton 142, South Johnston 138, Southern Lee 124.5, Western Harnett 114.5, Overhills 110.5 and Gray’s Creek 103.
Eastern Carolina 3-A: Eastern Wayne remains as the conference leader, taking first place in men’s swimming and second place in women’s basketball and wrestling. James B. Hunt still trails in second place and finished the season with a conference title in wrestling and a second-place finish in women’s swimming. Conference standings: Eastern Wayne 118, James B. Hunt 115.5, C.B. Aycock 98.5, Southern Wayne 94.5, Beddingfield 88 and Kinston 61.5.
Mid-Piedmont 3-A: Ragsdale had another excellent season taking conference crowns in men’s and women’s swimming and ties for first place in men’s and women’s basketball. Eastern Randolph broke the dead-lock for second place and pulled away from Asheboro with third-place finishes in men’s basketball and women’s swimming. Conference standings: Ragsdale 145.5, Eastern Randolph 129, Asheboro 122, Southeast Guilford 121.5, Trinity 107, Southwestern Randolph 98.5 and Randleman 88.5.
Mid-State 3-A: Williams is still the conference leader with a top finish in wrestling, but J.F. Webb follows closely and finished the season with a top finish in basketball. Conference standings: Williams 48.5, J.F. Webb 48, Eastern Alamance 45.5, Southern Alamance 41, Northern Vance 31 and South Granville 29.
Mountain Athletic 3-A: T.C. Roberson remains on top and swept conference titles in men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming. Asheville follows in second place. Conference standings: T.C. Roberson 147, Asheville 115, North Buncombe 104, Franklin 96, Enka 74, Tuscola 72 and Clyde Erwin 48.
NEW Six 3-A: Rocky Mount continues to lead the conference in points and finished the winter with championships in women’s basketball and wrestling and a tie for first in men’s basketball. Fike and Nash Central are tied for second place in the conference. Fike took the title for women’s swimming while Nash Central took the title for men’s swimming this season. Conference standings: Rocky Mount 49.5, Fike 46.5, Nash Central 46.5, Southern Nash 41.5, Northern Nash 41 and Southwest Edgcombe 38.
North Piedmont 3-A: Top finishes in men’s and women’s swimming and wrestling allowed Lake Norman to the conference lead. Mooresville now trails in second and recorded top finishes in wrestling and women’s swimming. Conference standings: Lake Norman 487.5, Mooresville 435, Northwest Cabarrus 417.5, East Rowan 362.5, Statesville 337.5, West Rowan 327, South Rowan 290, North Iredell 265, West Iredell 240 and Jesse Carson 112.5.
Piedmont Triad 3-A: Reagan finished first overall in the winer with first-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming and a second-place finish in men’s basketball. Second place went to Southwest Guilford, who recorded a championship in women’s basketball and a second-place finish in men’s swimming. Conference standings: Ronald Reagan 49.5, Southwest Guilford 47.5, Glenn 45, Parkland 35.5, High Point Andrews 23.5 and Carver 13.
South Piedmont 3-A: Concord swept conference titles in men’s swimming and men’s and women’s basketball to take over the top spot. Marvin Ridge dropped to second place and finished second in women’s swimming. Conference standings: Concord 435, Marvin Ridge 397.5, Sun Valley 352.5, Porter Ridge 346.5, A.L. Brown 335, Hickory Ridge 325, Piedmont 282.5, Parkwood 260 and Anson 197.5.
Triad 3-A: A conference championship in women’s swimming helped Western Guilford hold on to the conference lead while Morehead closed in with championships in wrestling and men’s swimming. Conference standings: Western Guilford 65, Morehead 62.5, Northeast Guilford 57.5, Western Alamance 52.5, Rockingham County 49, Northern Guilford 39.5, Dudley 33.5 and Bartlett Yancey 27.5.
Class 3-A/4-A Conference Results
Big South 3-A/4-A: Although Ashbrook did not record any top finishes this season, they still remain in the lead. Forestview had top finishes in women’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming and continues to follow in second place. Conference standings: Ashbrook 126, Forestview 118, East Gaston 112.5, South Point 111.5, Hunter Huss 97, Crest 93.5 and North Gaston 79.5.
Coastal 3-A/4-A: J.H. Rose maintains a slim lead over New Bern and recorded league titles in men’s and women’s swimming. New Bern had a title in wrestling. Conference standings: J.H. Rose 133, New Bern 132, South Central 115.5, Havelock 113.5, D.H. Conley 113.5, West Carteret 109.5, Washington 95, West Craven 47.
Mideastern 3-A/4-A: Hoggard stretched its lead over the competition with first-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. New Hanover finished the season with a championship in men’s basketball and is second overall. Conference standings: Hoggard 72, New Hanover 55.5, Laney 49, Jacksonville 48, Ashley 44, White Oak 39.5, West Brunswick 22.
Queen City 3-A/4-A: Charlotte Catholic held on to first place in men’s and women’s swimming, women’s basketball and wrestling. West Mecklenburg trails in second and had a runner-up finish in men’s basketball. Conference standings: Charlotte Catholic 73, West Mecklenburg 56, Harding 51, Olympic 46, Waddell 25.5, Berry Academy 17 and Garinger 12.5.
Class 4-A Conference Results
CAP Seven 4-A: With a half-point difference between the two, Leesville Road leads Enloe as the conference leader. Enloe finished the season with top finishes in men’s and women’s swimming and diving. Conference standings: Leesville Road 62.5, Enloe 62, Broughton 60, Wakefield 52, Sanderson 47, Millbrook 44 and Wake Forest-Rolesville 35.
Central Piedmont 4-A: Mount Tabor continues to lead the league and recorded conference crowns in men’s and women’s basketball. West Forsyth is in second place and finished the season with a championship in men’s swimming. Conference standings: Mount Tabor 113.5, West Forsyth 96.5, Reynolds 93.5, Davie 90.5, North Davidson 79 and North Forsyth 52.
Greater Neuse River 4-A: Championships in men’s basketball, cheerleading and men’s and women’s swimming helped Clayton stay in first place. Southeast Raleigh advanced to second place with titles in men’s and women’s track and gymnastics. Conference standings: Clayton 96, Southeast Raleigh 94, West Johnston 87, Garner 86, Knightdale 85, East Wake 78, Smithfield Selma 76 and Holly Springs 75.
ME-CA Six 4-A: North Mecklenburg’s first-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming and tie for first in men’s basketball allowed them to remain the conference leader. Hopewell is second overall and recorded a tie for second place in men’s basketball. Conference standings: North Mecklenburg 123.5, Hopewell 113.5, J.M. Robinson 108.5, Mallard Creek 98.5, Central Cabarrus 86.5, Vance 81.5, West Charlotte 68.
Metro 4-A: Grimsley had an outstanding season with conference crowns in men’s and women’s basketball and men’s swimming and was able to pass Northwest Guilford for the lead. Northwest Guilford is now second overall and finished first in women’s swimming and wrestling. Conference standings: Grimsley 59, Northwest Guilford 54.5, Page 52, East Forsyth 43, High Point Central 28 and Ben L. Smith 15.5.
Mid-Southeastern 4-A: Jack Britt broke the first-place tie and pulled ahead of Pinecrest with top finishes in men’s basketball and wrestling. Pinecrest is now second overall. Conference standings: Jack Britt 68, Pinecrest 60, Scotland County 45, Hoke County 43, Richmond Senior 40.5, Seventy First 35.5, Westover 32.5 and Douglas Byrd 23.5.
Northwestern 4-A: Watauga leads the conference and recorded a second-place finish in men’s swimming. A second-place finish in women’s swimming put A.C. Reynolds second in the conference. Conference standings: Watauga 62.5, A.C. Reynolds 53.5, East Blake 52.5, South Caldwell 50.5, Freedom 49, McDowell 35 and Alexander Central 32.5.
PAC Six 4-A: Chapel Hill had an outstanding season, earning league titles in men’s and women’s swimming and wrestling to remain as the conference leader. East Chapel Hill finished with second-place finishes in men’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming and still follows in second place overall. Conference standings: Chapel Hill 77.5, East Chapel Hill 69.5, Jordan 62.5, Riverside 57, Northern Durham 49.5, Hillside 36.5, Person 31 and Southern Durham 25.5.
Southwestern 4-A: Top finishes in men’s basketball and wrestling put Myers Park in the lead again this season. Providence took second place overall and recorded league titles in men’s and women’s swimming. Conference standings: Myers Park 124.5, Providence 117.5, Weddington 111.5, Ardrey Kell 109.5, Butler 99.5, South Mecklenburg 99, East Mecklenburg 93 and Independence 71.5.
Tri-Eight 4-A: Conference titles in men’s and women’s swimming and a second-place finish in women’s basketball helped Apex pass the competition to take the conference lead. Green Hope dropped to second place and recorded runner-up finishes in women’s swimming and wrestling. Conference standings: Apex 87.5, Green Hope 82, Athens Drive 72.5, Middle Creek 65, Cary 57, Lee County 45.5, Panther Creek 45.5 and Fuquay Carina 42.
Two Rivers 4-A: Terry Sanford recorded a league title in men’s basketball to help it take the top spot in the conference. South View now occupies second place after top finishes in wrestling and women’s basketball. Conference standings: Terry Sanford 49.5, South View 48.5, Cape Fear 39.5, Lumberton 39, Pine Forest 35, E.E. Smith 23 and Purnell Swett 17.5.
