2002 Wachovia Conference Cup Fall Standings Announced
CHAPEL HILL-The North Carolina High School Athletic today announced the
fall standings in the Wachovia Conference Cup competitions for the 2002-2003 academic year.
The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by Wachovia and sanctioned by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performance within their respective athletic conferences. Wachovia has sponsored a conference awards program since 1980.
The Wachovia Conference Cup formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy is a companion to the Wachovia Cup, a statewide award given to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each of four classifications.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification.
Class 1-A Conference Results:
Atlantic Seven 1-A: Jamesville locks into first place with a second-place finish in volleyball and a fourth-place finish in football. Camden follows with a conference title in volleyball and a second-place finish in football. Conference standings: Jamesville 25, Camden 23, Columbia 22, Cape Hatteras 19.5, Bear Grass and Mattamuskeet 15 each and Creswell 14.
Carolina 1-A: Rosewood used first-place finishes in women's tennis and men's soccer and second-place finish in football to land in first place, followed by Farmville Central, which was first in two sports. Conference standings: Rosewood 23.5 points, Farmville Central 22, Princeton 16, Spring Creek 15.5, North Johnston 13, Ayden Grifton 12 and North Duplin 6.
Coastal Plains 1-A: First-place finishes in tennis, cross-country and a tie for first in football helps Lejeune to lead the conference. Topsail is second with two second-place finishes in volleyball and tennis. Conference standings: Lejeune 53.5, Topsail 51.5, Dixon 49, North Brunswick 37, Pamlico 31.5, Heidi Trask 30.5, and Jones 22.
Four Rivers 1-A: Williamston stands in first with winning the conference championship in football and sharing the title in volleyball. Gates lands in second place with a second-place finish in football. Conference standings: Williamston 24, Gates County 21, Southside 20, Perquimans 19, Roanoke 17, Plymouth 16 and Northside 13.
Northwest 1-A: Surry Central outdistanced East Surry after finishing in ties for first in soccer and baseball and taking first in men's cross-country. East Surry brought home first in football as well as a tie for first in volleyball. Conference standings; Surry Central 73.5, East Surry 68.5, Starmount 62, Mount Airy 62, North Stokes 61.5, South Stokes 56.5, East Wilkes 55, Elkin 43.5 and Alleghany 39.5
Smoky Mountain 1-A: Murphy, which finished first in football and men's and women's cross-country, locks into first-place with Hayesville standing in second with second-place finishes in football and men's and women's cross-country. Conference standings: Murphy 65, Hayesville 61, Swain 57, Andrews 45, Robbinsville 43, Rosman 32, Hiwassee Dam 30, Highlands 24, Blue Ridge 19, Cherokee 15 and Nantahala 7.
Southern Foothills 1-A: Four first-place finishes in women's cross country, tennis, volleyball, and soccer enables Hendersonville to have the lead over Polk County, who had two second-place finishes in soccer and tennis. Conference standings; Hendersonville 79, Polk County 60, Bessemer City 50, Highland 42, Maiden 41 and Cherryville 40.
Super Six 1-A: Wallace Rose Hill leads in points with clinching the conference championship in football. Midway finished first in volleyball putting them in the second-place spot. Conference standings: Wallace Rose Hill 10, Midway 9, Hobbton and Lakewood 7 each, James Kenan 6 and Union 3.
Tar Roanoke 1-A: Durham School of the Arts uses first-place finishes in
volleyball and men's cross-country to put them on top. Louisburg tied for first in football and soccer for a second place standing. Conference standings: Durham School of the Arts 34, Louisburg 28.5, Franklinton 27.5, North Edgecombe 11, Northampton West 9, Weldon 5 and Northampton East 3.
Yadkin Valley 1-A: Albemarle stands on top with first-place finishes in football, soccer and men's cross-country. North Moore slides into second with second-place finishes in volleyball and men's and women's cross-country. Conference standings: Albemarle 68, North Moore 67, Jordan Matthews 65.5, West Davidson 61.5, Chatham Central 61, South Davidson 55.5, South Stanly 52.5 and East Montgomery 43.
Class 2-A Conference Results:
Central Carolina 2-A: Salisbury bypassed Ledford by taking first-place in both
soccer and women's cross country, with a second-place finish in tennis. Ledford follows close behind with two second-place finishes in both volleyball and soccer. Conference standings: Salisbury 47, Ledford 44.5, West Iredell 44, West Stokes 37.5, East Davidson 37, Central Davidson and North Rowan 33, and Lexington 30.
East Central 2-A: Swansboro, paced by first-place finishes in soccer, volleyball, tennis and women's cross-country, leads the conference in points. Croatan won the conference championship in men's cross-country landing them in second-place Conference standings: Swansboro 65, Croatan 57.5, Richlands 56, East Duplin 52.5, Southwest Onslow 48, Northside 38.5 and East Carteret 35.5.
Eastern Plains 2-A: Greene Central, conference champions in football, tennis and women's cross-country, stands in first-place. North Lenoir claimed titles in volleyball and soccer to place them in second. Conference standings: Greene Central 23.75, North Lenoir 21, South Lenoir 15.5, Tarboro 13.5, North Pitt 13 and Southwest Edgecombe 12.
Mid-State 2-A: In a deadlock for first, Andrews took first in football and men's cross-country, while Northwood was champions in soccer and women's cross-country. Conference standings: Andrews and Northwood 32, East Alamance 29, Graham 25, Southern Guilford 17, Randleman 14.5 and Cedar Ridge 13.5
Midwest 2-A: Shelby, the conference champion in women's cross-country and sharing the title in football, leads over Bandys who split the conference championship in football. Conference standings: Shelby 43, Bandys 37.5, Lincolnton 37, Bunker Hill 33.5, Newton-Conover and West Lincoln 30 each, East Rutherford 26.5 and Chase 16.5.
Mountain Valley 2-A: A first-place finish in women's cross country is just enough to allow Hiberton to be in the lead, followed by Wilkes Central who took first-place in tennis and second in soccer and women's cross country. Conference standings: Hibriten 69.5, Wilkes Central 68.5, West Wilkes 67.5, Forbush 63, Ashe County 61.5, North Surry 59.5, North Wilkes 54 and West Caldwell 53.5.
Northern Carolina 2-A: Finishing first in soccer and men's and women's cross-country allows Roanoke Rapids to stand slightly above Northern Vance who was conference champions in football. Conference standings: Roanoke Rapids 70, Northern Vance 69.5, Southern Vance 69, South Granville 55, Warren County 50.5, Bunn 50, Southeast Halifax 32 and Northwest Halifax 21.
North State 2-A: Reidsville matches Western Guilford for points, with Reidsville claiming titles in tennis, football and men's cross-country. Western Guilford placed first in women's cross-country and second in soccer. Conference standings: Reidsville and Western Guilford 56, Western Alamance 49, McMichael 41, Burlington Cummings 36 and Eastern Guilford 32.
Rocky River 2-A: Charlotte Catholic lands in first-place with top finishes in every sport. Monroe secures a spot in second with a second-place finish in soccer and three third-place finishes. Conference standings: Charlotte Catholic 72, Monroe 56.5, Mount Pleasant 54, West Stanly 50.5, North Stanly 47.5, West Montgomery 41 and Forest Hills 38.5.
Tri-Six 2-A: Clinton clinched a first-place finish in volleyball and football to be first overall. A first-place standing in tennis for St. Paul's allows them to come in second. Conference standings: Clinton 32, St. Paul's 28, Fairmont 25.5, Red Springs 23, West Bladen 22.5, and South Roberson 16.
Waccamaw 2-A: Conference championships in football and tennis place South Columbus on top. Whitesville holds onto second place with a second-place finish in volleyball and a first-place finish in tennis. Conference standings: South Columbus 135,
Whiteville 132.5, East Bladen 115, South Brunswick 107.5, West Columbus 95 and East Columbus 90.
Western Highlands 2-A: Brevard took first-place in soccer and tennis to land first-place in the conference. North Henderson finishes second with the first-place wins in both men's and women's cross-country. Conference standings: Brevard 74, North Henderson 71, C.D. Owen 68, West Henderson 66.5, Pisgah 53, Mitchell 53, Avery 47.5 and Heritage 43.
Class 2-A/3-A Conference Results:
Northeastern Coastal 2-A/3-A: Manteo leads with conference titles in football,
soccer and men's and women's cross country, followed by Currituck who took second-place in both men's and women's cross-country. Conference standings: Manteo 69, Currituck 56.5, Hertford County 56, Northeastern 54.5, Edenton Holmes 43, Pasquotank 37.5 and Bertie 31.5.
Class 3-A Conference Results:
Big Eight 3-A: Clayton finished first with first-place finishes in football and women's cross country. Wilson Fike lands in second, with a tie for first place in football. Conference standings: Clayton 72.5, Wilson Fike 71, Hunt 66.5, Smithfield- Selma 65.5, Harnett Central 62.5, Triton 58, Southern Nash 52, and Wilson Beddingfield 50.5.
Big South 3-A: Forestview stands in the lead with a top finish in soccer. With a first-place finish in women's cross-country, Ashbrook secures second. Conference standings: Forestview 74, Ashbrook 71, South Point 68, East Lincoln 67, East Gaston 66.5, North Gaston 38.5 and Hunter Huss 38.
Eastern Carolina 3-A: Eastern Wayne, the conference champion in soccer and men's and women's cross-country, stands on top over C.B. Aycock. Aycock placed first in tennis and golf. Conference standings: Eastern Wayne 79, C.B. Aycock 78.5, West Carteret 76.5, Washington 60.5, Southern Wayne 53, West Craven 42, Kinston 34 and Goldsboro 25.5.
Five County 3-A: East Chapel Hill leads the conference with top finishes in five fall sports. Southern Alamance stands in second place with a first-place finish in football. Conference standings: East Chapel Hill 37, Southern Alamance 32, Burlington Williams 28, Durham Hillside 17, Southern Durham 16, Oxford Webb 14, and Bartlett Yancey 10.
Mountain Athletic 3-A: T.C. Roberson stands on top with first-place finishes in men's and women's cross-country, soccer, and tennis. Asheville falls into second place with finishing number one in football and tennis. Conference standings: T.C. Roberson 97, Asheville 81, Enka 79, North Buncombe 70, Franklin 59, East Henderson 46, Smoky Mountain 36, Tuscola 36 and Clyde Erwin 22.
North Piedmont 3-A: Standing in first-place with a tie for first in football and a top finish in soccer is Mooresville. Statesville ended the season being first in tennis and with a tie for first in volleyball. Conference standings: Mooresville 260, Statesville 237.5, Northwest Cabarrus 210, A.L. Brown, East Rowan and West Rowan 167.5, North Iredell 160, and Lake Norman 160.
Piedmont Triad 3-A: Northeast Guilford had a first-place finish in women's cross-country, a dead heat for first in soccer and a second-place finish in volleyball. Glenn follows in second with placing second in football and men's cross country and sharing the title for soccer. Conference standings: Northwest Guilford 43.5, Glenn 40.5, Rockingham County 38.5, Morehead 35.5, Southwest Guilford 28.5, Smith 24, Carver 22, Parkland 17.5 and Dudley 12.
South Piedmont 3-A: Weddington battled for four top place finishes to put them in the lead. Piedmont clinched a second-place finish in volleyball and a tie for first in soccer. Conference standings: Weddington 275, Piedmont 245, Robinson 242.5, Concord 205, Parkwood 182.5, Sun Valley 175 and Anson 85.
Southwestern Foothills 3-A: Hickory finished first in men's cross-country and soccer to take the lead over St. Stephens, who had a first-place tie in tennis and placed second in men's cross-country. Conference standings: Hickory 61, St. Stephens 59.5, R-S Central 58, Kings Mountain 54, Fred T. Foard 52, Crest 48.5 and Burns 45.
Tri-County 3-A: Ragsdale secured first-place in soccer, football and volleyball to set them in the lead. Southeast Guilford placed first in women's cross-country and second in volleyball to hold in second. Conference standings: Ragsdale 69.5, Southeast Guilford 64.5, Asheboro 60.5, Southwest Randolph 54, Union Pines 53.5, Trinity 41 and Eastern Randolph 39.5.
Class 3-A/4-A Conference Results:
Mideastern 3-A/4-A: Wilmington Hoggard, the conference champion in football,
cross-country and volleyball, takes a large lead over second-place New Hanover who won the title in tennis. Conference standings: Wilmington Hoggard 52.5, New Hanover 36.5, Wilmington Laney 34, Jacksonville 33, White Oak 30, West Brunswick 29, Ashley 24 and Pender 9.
Class 4-A Conference Results:
Big East 4-A: Greenville Rose takes first-place with top finishes in tennis and soccer. The women's cross-country team clinched first in the conference to land a second-place spot. Conference standings: Greenville Rose 27.5, Northern Nash 24.5, New Bern 22, Havelock and Rocky Mount 18.5 and Greenville Conley 15.
Cap Six 4-A: First-place finishes in football, tennis and women's cross country lifts Raleigh Broughton into first place overall. Wakefield is in a dead heat for second with second-place finishes in football, tennis and volleyball against Millbrook's top finishes in soccer and volleyball. Conference standings: Raleigh Broughton 28, Wakefield and Millbrook 26, Leesville Roads 20, Sanderson 17 and Wake Forest-Rolesville 9.
Central Piedmont 4-A: First-place finishes in tennis, women's cross country, and
soccer allows R.J. Reynolds to be on top. West Forsythe brought home top finishes in men's cross-country and football to stand second in the conference. Conference standings: R.J. Reynolds 54, West Forsythe 49, Davie and North Davidson 46, South Rowan 39, and South Iredell 36.
ME-CA Eight 4-A: With winning conference titles in tennis and women's cross-country and second-place finishes in volleyball and men's cross-country, North Mecklenburg takes the lead for first by a small margin. Vance follows closely behind with a top finish in volleyball and second-place finishes in football, tennis and women's cross-country. Conference standings: North Mecklenburg 70, Vance 69.5, Hopewell 65, Independence 63, Central Cabarrus 52.5, Harding 46.5, West Mecklenberg 45 and West Charlotte 38.5.
Metro 4-A: Mount Tabor, which won conference titles in football, men's and women's cross-country, and soccer, leads the conference in points. Northwest Guilford stands in second, finishing first in volleyball. Conference standings: Mount Tabor 31.5, Northwest Guilford 22.5, Greensboro Page 21, East Forsyth 19, Greensboro Grimsley and North Forsyth 16.
Midsoutheastern 4-A: Scotland County lands in first with a top finish in tennis and second-place finishes in volleyball, golf and soccer. Following in second-place is Jack Britt with a first-place finish in volleyball and second in tennis and women's and men's cross-country. Conference standings: Scotland County 46.5, Jack Britt 45.5, Pinecrest 42, Richmond Senior 40, Douglas Byrd 22, Hoke 19.5, Seventy-First 16.5 and Westover 14.
Northwestern 4-A: Watauga High School, the conference champion in golf, men's and women's cross country is in first overall on top of Freedom who had a top finish in soccer. Conference standings, Watauga 42.5, Freedom 40, A.C. Reynolds 37, McDowell 29.5, East Burke 23.5, Alexander Central 15.5, and South Caldwell 7.
PAC-6 4-A: Chapel Hill finished first in men's and women's cross country to put them ahead. Riverside stands in second with first-place finishes in football and volleyball. Conference standings: Chapel Hill 29, Durham Riverside 27, Durham Jordan 24, Northern Durham 24, Orange and Person 11.
Southwestern 4-A: First-place finishes in six sports allows Charlotte Providence to be the leader. Myers Park stands in second. Conference standings: Charlotte Providence 77, Myers Park 67.5, South Mecklenberg 63, Butler 57, East Mechlenberg 56.5, Waddell 42, Olympic 31.5, and Garinger 27.5.
Tri-Seven 4-A: Apex clinched conference titles in volleyball and football while Green Hope secured the top place in tennis and men's and women's cross-country. The two schools were co-champions in soccer leaving them sharing the first-place spot. Conference standings: Apex and Green Hope 36.5, Lee County 23, Western Harnett and Fuquay-Varina 22, Cary 21.5 and Middle Creek 5.5.
Triangle Alliance 4-A: Enloe ties for first with Southeast Raleigh, with a top finish in men's cross-country and a tie for first-place in soccer and tennis, while Southeast Raleigh won a conference title in women's cross-country. Conference standings: Enloe and Southeast Raleigh 25, Athens 24, Garner 21.5, East Wake 18 and South Johnston 12.5.
Two Rivers 4-A: Terry Sanford claimed conference titles in volleyball, tennis, soccer and women's cross country to inch by Southview that won the title in men's cross-
country and had a tie for first in football to put them in second-place. Conference standings: Terry Sanford 35, South View 32.5, Pine Forest 29, Lumberton 24.5, E.E. Smith 21.5, Purnell Swett 10.5 and Cape Fear 10.
