Four championships will be up for grabs on Saturday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 18th annual dual team wrestling championships.
The championships are held on high school campuses and this year the Eastern champions are the hosts. All of the teams advancing to the Saturday championship matches earned a pair of victories on Thursday night to gain a shot at the state title.
In the 4-A championship, undefeated Cary (36-0) will play host to West Forsyth (30-3) at four o’clock Saturday afternoon. Cary was runner-up to Davie County in the 2005 dual team tournament and is in the finals for the 12th time with five previous NCHSAA championships.
Unbeaten Winston-Salem Parkland (40-0) will travel to Eden to take on Morehead (28-3) for the 3-A championship with a 6 p.m. start. Morehead is the defending champ and has won three of the last five state crowns, while Parkland is in the finals for the first time since 1997 after winning back-to-back titles in ’95 and ’96.
Mayodan Dalton McMichael (44-11), the 2004 2-A champ, will host Newton-Conover (43-2) in the 2-A championship, which starts at 6 p.m.. Newton-Conover has been in the playoffs 11 times but the Red Devils are seeking their first state title in dual team wrestling.
Defending 1-A champ Alleghany (24-3) will travel to Topsail (46-9) for a 2 p.m. battle in a rematch of last year’s final won by Alleghany 42-27. Alleghany is seeking its third 1-A championship in the last six years.
Weigh-ins will occur an hour before the match begins. Wendy's and the Carolina Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
