CARY – Junior forward Tandy Banks figured in five goals as Jacksonville White Oak dominated play and rolled to a 6-1 triumph over Southwest Guilford in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A women’s soccer championship on Saturday afternoon at SAS Soccer Park.
Banks, who was selected as the championship Most Valuable Player, scored two goals and had three assists to lead the way for the Lady Vikings. Banks finished the season with a whopping 62 goals.
White Oak led 2-0 at halftime and then erupted for four goals within a span of less than six minutes to blow the game wide open. Freshman forward Stephanie Rose had a hat trick with three goals within that short stretch, two on assists from Banks.
The only Southwest Guilford goal came on a penalty kick by Jessica Henderson with under 10 minutes to play.
White Oak was in the finals for the third consecutive year after winning the state crown in 2004 and finishing second last year. The Lady Vikings finished with a 21-2-1 mark.
Southwest Guilford closed the campaign with a 15-9-2 slate after starting the season 0-4-1. Southwest was making its sixth NCHSAA women’s soccer title appearance but first visit to the finals since 2002.
