CHAPEL HILL— Dr. Gene Moore, superintendent of the Cleveland County Schools, will serve as president of the North Carolina High School Board of Directors for the 2005-06 academic year.

Moore will serve as the Association president for his one-year term, replacing Ralph Holloway, principal of East Carteret High School, in that position. Holloway moves into the role of immediate past president. Dr. Ed Sadler, superintendent of the Gaston County schools, has now completed his term of service on the board after last year’s stint as immediate past president.
Vann Pannell, former principal at Camden and now principal at South Brunswick, will be vice-president for the coming year.

Moore earned his bachelor’s degree, master’s and doctorate all at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, after attending Wingate Junior College. He has been superintendent of the Cleveland County schools merged district since January of 2004, and prior to that was superintendent of the pre-merger Cleveland County schools from 1999 to 2004.

He formerly had served as superintendent of the Stanly County schools and was principal at East Forsyth from 1990-93. Moore actually began his career in education at East Forsyth as a math teacher from 1977 to ’84.

Gene has been active in his community as well, having served in various leadership roles of the United Way Campaign for Cleveland County. He is a previous recipient of the Cleveland County United Way Volunteer of the Year award.

New members of the Board include principal Allison Sholar of First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills; Dr. Bobbie Short, superintendent of Watauga County schools; Charles Simmons, athletic director and coach at Hertford County High School; and Si Simmons, athletic director at Smoky Mountain High School in Sylva.

New Board members were recommended by the NCHSAA's Nominating Committee, based on the requirements of the Association's constitution and by-laws. The member schools at eight regional meetings select nominees for consideration across the state, then from among those nominees individuals are selected by the Nominating Committee to fill the available slots. The membership approves the new members at the Annual Meeting in May.

" We believe that we will continue to have outstanding leadership,” said NCHSAA executive director Charlie Adams. “We certainly look forward to Gene Moore stepping into the role as president and we feel sure that he will give us the same sort of great direction we have gotten from our last several presidents. He has certainly been a valuable member of the Board in his previous years of service.

"We are also really excited about the caliber of people who will be joining the Board of Directors, which should help us to maintain an outstanding Board to serve our membership.”
